Interesting - Karel Fraeye (from Chicago Addicks blog)

Apologies if already posted within an existing thread...?

Jose Riga's assistant Karel Fraeye has been located and has been appointed as head coach of Belgium Division 3 side VW Hamme.

A penny for Fraeye's thoughts then as he returns home to East Flanders in north Belgium, but Hamme represent a level higher than his last job in Belgium at Eendracht Zele.

Horribly translated this is what Karel said about his time at The Valley:

"I look back on that with a fantastic feeling adventure. It was an intense period with each two matches per week, but I have learned a lot. I cannot thank Mr Duchâtelet enough for this opportunity, but on the other hand, I would also continue to develop as head coach. Hence the choice for VW Van Hamme. Hamme is for me a step forward in my development. Charlton I regard as an unexpected chance to sample the profleven, but i do not want to skip steps. Mr Duchâtelet understand my choice and supports me 100% because in addition to the work at Van Hamme I will also continue to make analyzes and scoutingsverslagen for the network, just as the past half year. I will also have a coordinating role for his network."

An interesting last couple of sentences.

    Seems strange that he's employed now by this new club, but will still also be working for Duchatelet, analysing & scouting. I'd assume that the Belgian 3rd tier is probably part-time in that case.

    Wish him all the best. He and José certainly came in and did a good job for us in difficult circumstances.

    This is more or less how he introduced himself to some of us after the Birmingham City home defeat last season.

    That's right Seth. One would hope that with his experience at SE7 these last few months he can help pick out the right players to add to our squad. I'm surprised he is going so quickly.

    Do you think these people are on some sort of retainer? I mean very few people are able to sack/move people on/let go employees yet retain some kind of hold over them for future use.

    That would appear to be the implication. It's very odd really, from the perspective of both Fraeye and Duchatelet. Fraeye would appear, genuinely, to want to learn and develop, which is quite refreshing really, while Duchatelet appears to be prepared to use somebody in an important role who is not full time.

    Not quite sure what to make of it really. I guess the positive might be that our Owner really trusts Fraeye's insight and judgement and, at the same time, is willing to take a long-term view about how his "employee" will add value.

    It's certainly going to be different under RD.

    Yes, but as far as we know Duchatelet has no interest in VW Hamme so that's the odd bit. Fraeye has two employers it seems, not two roles within one organisation.

    It's a bit like somebody working for a local food manufacturer while providing consultancy services to Unilever, say. That might make sense if the consultant has a particular specialism and/or if that skill isn't needed by full-time by Unilever, but it's not obvious those conditions apply here.

    It could be a simple cost management measure, which would be a concern I think since the network role is very important, or perhaps just another indication of Duchatelet's eccentricity.

    I have no idea, but Belgium is a very in-cohesive country, with languages, regions and cultures. I don't think those from Flanders have much in common with those from Brussels or those from Liege.

    Brussels is stuck in the middle though, with all three groups mixed in together. It's a major thing that stands in the way of the country splitting. You can't split Brussels. I would assume RD's name indicates that he has a French background, but Sint -Truiden, his home town is in Flanders. Riga comes from Liege which is the French side. Katrien's name sounds Flemish, as does Karel Fraeye's. Belgium isn't Bosnia. Thankfully.

    He'll be on some kind of bonus for successful referrals I reckon. Basically he just goes about his business and flags up any potential talent for RD along the way.
