Does Rooney Start

  • Its hard to judge based on the warm up games. No one wants to get injured or tired. I'd definitely start Rooney but drop him if he doesn't perform in the first couple of games.

    Lampard--Henderson
    Ox--Rooney--Llanala
    Sturridge

Its a good problem to have because you could easily put Barkley, Gerrard, Sterling, Wiltshire in that lineup and it would still be as strong. Can't remember the last time we had as much strength in depth.

Lampards past it, good old head but he's past it and has never been better than gerrard.

I've never been much of a fan of Hollywood pass Gerrard especially not for England. I feel if he plays it should be in the Rooney/Barkley position but Rooney and Barkley are both ahead of him in my opinion.
  • wayne rooney has yet to score a single goal at a world cup tournament plenty in qualifiers but never on the biggest stage compare that to ronaldo klose etc and he looks very poor.

Tournament football doesn't suit him at all. Intermittent fixtures don't work for a guy who needs to play twice a week to hit top form. Then there's the weather and relative isolation of training compounds. Add to that the self-inflicted stress of having his sexual proclivities plastered over the papers back home.

Barkley looks like the player we hoped Rooney would be. And he plays with the fearlessness of Rooney in '04. Oxlade too. I don't expect us to do well, but those two have the potential to do something, even if our defence does let us down.

i'd always rather play players where they play for their club, Gerrard is no longer an attacking midfielder in my opinion and anchors the midfield for liverpool. I've always preferred an out of form gerrard to an in form lampard anyway, but that's just me.
  • I think the biggest problem at this world cup will be at the back. Hart looks like he's regained some sort of form - and by god he'll need it. Cahill and Jagielka are decent, but both exposed terribly by pace, Baines is a cracking player but better suited to 3-5-2 and often caught out of position and Johnson is just awful - an extremely average premiership player who is fortunate that every other English right back is turd.

  • I always feel that, despite his talents, Wayne Rooney diminishes the England team when he plays. Sort of the opposite to a Makalele or even a Peter Reid type player.

In the past I have been disappointed in Wilshere as I think he has always just trys to hard. In the last few games I have started to see what he brings, he can carry the ball right to the heart of the oppositions defence it looks like he is relaxing more, which I credit Hodgson with doing to the whole squad.

I also think that Welbeck has talent and that he might just surprise us. I don't think that Frank Lampard should be in the squad but he is about the only one.
  • Watching the game today I thought our passing was the best I have seen in a long time, admittedly the oppo was not great. However we need to play with more pace, slow build up doesn't suit us.
  • Amazing how some people see it . I thought Wilshere was good when he come on.

Gerrard and Henderson seem to sit in the pocket in front of the back 4 too much. Wilshere goes in there then comes out, goes back in, travels forward with it etc. He would start next to Gerrard for me.
  • Wilshere is more creative then Henderson IMO, so if we play the likes of Rooney and Welbeck we need him.

If we decide to just go for it with our most exciting young attacking talent(Sterling, Ox & Barkley) then i would prefer to have Henderson next to Gerrard for more protection as Wilshere has just looked too fragile in the friendlies.

I really don't wanna see Lampard starting unless Gerrard is in injured, just have hime ready if the opposition defence is sitting deep and we need a goal with 20 minutes to go.
  • Rooney is coming back from injury, and still does not look match fit, unfortunately I fear that by the time he is match fit , England will be on the plane home ( and not with the trophy).

Where do I claim my five pounds?
