US Open Golf 2014

The World Cup isn't the only major championship starting this week. The US Open heads back to Pinehurst and it will be a rarity in that there will not be any rough. Instead, the course's waste areas have been restored. This along with Phil/FIGJAM are likely to be the week's big stories.

Apparently everyone will be struggling to hit greens and with there being lots of catchment areas it will come down to short game and putting even more than usual... Where's your money going?

  • Outside money I would go for Victor Dubisson been out for 5 weeks but came back 2 weeks ago with 2nd in Sweden, long with a good short game, should be big price.

I fancy Luke Donald to win (50-1) and Jason Duffner E/W (50-1) Edited
  • Jimmy Walker at 50/1 looks pretty good EW value to me.

10?! I've thought about Jason Dufner and he is a great player but I can't see him holding two majors at once.

Jason Day (33/1) has an underrated short game, the PGA Tour’s site reckon Schwartzel (50) is going well under the radar… I think I’ll do those two plus maybe Oosthuizen (75), and a tiny bet on Cabrera (175) as this is the sort of tournament he comes out of hibernation for.
  • Donald at 10/1 is a silly price for a guy who hasn't won a major. With no rough his lack of length will be a problem.
    Duff is a good price
  • That's a very good price for Day. McIlroy a good chance now he's ditched the crumpet, but his odds won't be worth the bet. Bubba worth a look.
  • My Mistake . Donald is 50-1

10-1 was the each way price.
  • Then Donald at that is a good each way.
  • Adam Scott 14/1
    Bubba Watson 20/1
    Webb Simpson 50/1
    Billy Horschel 80/1
Just cant see Mcllroy,Donald,Mickelson winning it
  • hmmm ..i think an experienced campaigner

Mickelson would be the peoples choice ,Maybe Jim Furyk may be westwood ..like to see sergio win

  • No rough, but you need to be accurate with your approach shots, brings Westwood into it as well as Dustin Johson and Bubba Watson who have all improved their second shots in. Donald has got longer off the tee this past year - rough normally harms his chances as he's not straight with the driver.

    I'm going to e/w :

    Westwood
    Dustin Johnson
    Bubba Watson
    Jordan Spieth
    Luke Donald
    Rory McIlroy

    Wish me luck!

Jason Day is +2 through 3 holes if anyone fancied an each way bet on him, odds will obviously be longer and I'm sure he'll pull it back.

I ended up going for Steve Stricker E/W over Oosthuizen, I don't think he'll win but he seems to be on far better form.
  • It does amaze me how people continue to wager their hard earned on Lee Westwood to win a major.

If you back him e/w I don't think his odds this year are bad! (1/5th the odds for top 8)

  • E/W I could maybe forgive, but if you seriously believe he's got 4 rounds of major championship quality in his locker, on small, incredibly difficult greens, IMO you are mistaken

I don't think the size of the greens is such a problem as he is one of the very best iron players around - it's more what he does when he gets on/close to them.
  • The size does matter, because the smaller the green, the less room there is between pin and green's edge. He'll have less green to work with and typically that is when Westwood gets into trouble, when delicacy and grace is required. He is a good iron player for sure, but 135th in greens in regulation this year tells a different story about his current form
  • I didn’t see anything last night and I’m sat at work but Martin Kaymer looks like he’s making a mockery of the course. A 65 yesterday and -3 after 10 today for a 6 shot lead. I guess he didn’t peak too early by winning The Players Championship, early days but it looks like his to lose. I’d be pretty happy if he won, Europe doesn’t have many too many multiple major winners to boast about.

All my bets look to have blown out, already.
  • Got Kaymer @ 40-1, D Johnson @ 22-1, McDowell @ 20-1, Scott @ 18-1 & Mickleson @ 22-1. Looking good right now. Day and Oosthuisen are my 2 blow outs right now.

  • Kaymer looks good at the moment and I backed him before today's round at 11/2.
