World Cup Question - I always forget the answer to this.

As the World Cup is about to start – I always seem to forget what happens if two teams end the group stage (say in 2nd and 3rd place) equal on points and goal difference/goals scored. What is the breakdown to divide them – are cautions used or does it go straight through to the toss of a coin?

  • Head to Head? if thats a draw then i think FIFA ranking comes into play before a coin toss
  • I think this could have happened to England at Italia '90 if we had drawn our final group game with Egypt 0 - 0 we would have had to draw lots with Holland or Ireland to see who would progress. Would have avoided a penalty shoot out if we'd lost.
  • Holland and Ireland did draw lots for 2nd and 3rd.

Luckily both teams went through as there we two 'best 3rd placed' teams that went through to next round.
  • Whoever can provide blatter with the heaviest brown envelope.

There going to give him an envelope after somebody has taken a dump in it?

  • "The ranking of teams in each group will be based on:

    1. Points in all group matches
    2. Goal difference in all group matches
    3. Goals scored in all group matches
    4. Points in matches between tied teams
    5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
    6. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
    7. Drawing of lots

Surely if 4 is the same then so would 5 and 6, for example if it was Uruguay and England 2nd and 3rd the game between each other was a 2-2 draw then then of course they will be the same

1990 WC drawing of lots, both teams were qualified already so it doesn't look as intense as it would be between second and third nowadays:

Agreed - but then the list was probably conjured up by Blatter.

It's just for completeness' sake I think. But yes, basically it means: points, then GD, then GS, then H2H and if not then: drawing of lots (as shown in video I found above).

  • Or if three teams are involved?
  • Imagine this set of results and the tension it would cause across three countries:

    England 1v1 Italy
    Uruguay 2v0 Costa Rica

    England 1v1 Uruguay
    Italy 2v0 Costa Rica

    England 2v0 Costa Rica
    Italy 1v1 Uruguay
  • Or if three teams are involved?

Drawing of lots with three teams to see who gets first, second and who goes home...

exactly - 4 5 6 is for when there are more than two teams involved as Weegie suggested.
  • Lol..... I clearly misunderstood what Weegie was saying. Did think it was a silly question.
  • Don't remember Holland being in our group at Italia '90
