I don't own my own my business but worked for a small, self owned food catering company in the summer that worked in festivals.
Was absolute quality and the owner makes a killing, and has actually just opened up a restaurant as well in Market Harbour.
Not sure if that's the type of thing you're looking at doing @CrayAddick, but the guy I worked for loves it, although I've seen the man come close to mentally breaking down on a few occasions.

Strangely enough this is the exact plan I have.... @DartfordAddick
It's a while since I've been to a bank for a business loan, so things might have changed. My advice would be to produce good financial forecasts that are plausible, particularly covering cashflow. By all means get help with this, but make sure you fully understand the figures. If you have ever watched Dragons Den, the ones that stumble most are the ones who have no understanding of their financials (plus, of course, those with ludicrous ideas).

If it all goes well you'll love it mate, I can't offer too much on the business side of things but I helped a lot in the logistics/organising so if you did have any questions I'd do my best to be of help.
Found it really interesting working for a small business, felt a lot more involved in the whole 'project' and found it pretty satisfying. Anyone on here who regularly goes to festivals has probably seen us about.
One of the things I noticed about the whole thing of being a Trader was that everyone helps you out, if you ever need help on site, your neighbours will more often than not be your best friends (although this is not always the case).
anyone used to creating business plans to present to banks etc can you send me a PM please
I suggest using one of the Business Plan software products. It forces you to think of everything in a logical order and puts all your ideas into a structure, otherwise you have all these ideas and plans which you don't know how to glue together, that's the most difficult part I think. It produces the reports and cash flows and projected outcomes for you from the information you put in. You can tinker with the numbers and you see the outputs immediately. You don't need to worry about layouts and formats. I did mine a few years ago using a programme that cost around £40 and it will save you a lot of time believe me. I gave up trying to find a template that fitted my business, everyone's ideas are unique, that's what led me to buying the software.
NLA 1) do some budgets/business plans BEFORE you commit any money. 2) when budgeting wages remember to add employers NIC at 13.2% 3) ensure you appreciate the difference between fixed and variable costs 4) project several scenarios for your sales and cost of sales 5) remember often you will have to give credit but not receive it 6) NEVER use invoice factoring (invoice discounting only slighly less dodgy) 7) if you rent premises, avoid repairing leases (widespread) 8) research your VAT status for future. Sometimes you are allowed net reclaims
Anyone know how you'd do the figures side of things if opening a bar? Eg How to predict how many customers I'll get.... Struggling with working it all out.
with there being so many people setting up or owning companies on here is there already a thread where people can see if they can be helpful to one another by referring business or using the product or service? if not one is needed surely.
My mate slick rick started his own business selling stick on pony tails at Greenwich market. During the David Beckham era he was literally clearing a pony every half an hour. Market weren't to good though after beckham stopped sporting a ponytail. All his trade after that came from bald hells angels. He soon gave it up. He is in the vajazzle market now.

they also remind you when your tax is due etc.
really simple and will be really good to show the banks.
All it does is ask you questions and gives you example answers.
