For reasons that escape me and aren't relevant, I was recently looking through a discussion about what got you started supporting the reds and in December 2010 was a posting by JVL along the lines "Nelse's book was what actually woke me up to support Charlton. Having an honorary grand dad (Billy Whittaker) who'd won the cup with Charlton...".
I've a maternal uncle, now in his 90's, who went to school (Old Dover Road) with Billy and classed him as one of his best mates. He was saddened when I told him that Colin Cameron's Valiant 500 listed Billy's death and, even more so, that the book, or other reports that I found, say he died in straightened circumstances.
