Championship dark horses or show ponies

Anyone have a slight suspicion that we could be the dark horses of the league this season?

Or will we come up short again ...

I'm counting no chickens, half the team are new to the country.. But I'm pretty sure we won't be going down this year.

If Bob Peeters can get the Team playing like the League One Champions did a few years ago then very much Dark Horses.

I'm really excited but when I try to select the Squad I can partly see square pegs / round holes though (Unless I'm just trying not to get my hopes up too much)
  • Another 3 decent signings, and you can lump on us getting in the playoffs.

Fixed it for you ;) - This is the Championship after all... So bloomin' competitive I wouldnt even rule out Blackpool with their eight players if they got in three more

If after 10 games of the season, we're tucked nicely into 2nd place and looking the part, then we can begin to believe.

But in 50 years of supporting Charlton, I've seen a few false dawns.

The reality could be of course, that we'll muddle our way to the middle of the table, beating the hard to beat teams (we might even give a fancied team an long awaited good hiding) and losing to the strugglers. It's ever been thus

But I'm hoping at least for a couple of decent unbeaten runs, some good passing football and winning goals. That'll do for a start.

Just to put this optimism into perspective we're rated the third worst team in the league by the bookies. I'm not being negative and like the recent signings but we still haven't convinced many outsiders yet.

We're 7/2 on Skybet just to finish in the top half!

Weren't we expected to finish like 12th by 442 when we smashed the league?

The odds say the only teams we're better than are Millwall and Blackpool. I'm not hung up on it but it's interesting how underated we are.

With you on the first part. And you can add the manager to that list.

    An unknown quantity for sure.

Watching videos and hearing from friends of friends foreign based uncles/grandmas that this player and that player is decent never ever convinces me.
This is Charlton. Prepare to fail.

  • I'll settle for upper mid table with a decent home record. That would be huge progress after last season. Even with these new recruits, promotion is not a reasonable expectation for this season, and probably not in our best interests either.

    2015/16 however....

Dark ponies we may be, but 80/1 to win it is a big price

I think we'll have a slow start as the new squad gels and we embed a style of play. Then start to climb the table later on and have a reasonable mid table finish, which personally I'd be pretty happy with.

Fancy Brentford to do us on opening day (newly promoted, first game and a consistent squad, like Bournemouth last season) and for all hell to break loose on here, but we'll grow into the season.

Top half will be a good achievement, but unlikely in my view.

People need to get their feet planted to the ground, take it from someone who gambles for a living. Unknown quantity which we are warrants the odds we are currently, great teams aren't built overnight, we have some ingredients that if used right might fire us top half, but I'll be looking down at those behind us rather than up especially for the start of this season, we'll be playing against teams who have played with each other for years (the majority of their team, anyhow), us for a half dozen or so games.

I fear we might be this seasons Millwall. Pushed the boat out a bit in the summer, have lots of people thinking we've done good business but end up being a bit flaky. Very much hope I'm wrong.

I'd say American Quarter Horses. Great for the early part of the season but gradually running out of steam.

I'd be happy with a top-half finish and laying the foundations for a promotion push the following season.
