Damage limitation. He looked like a spoilt brat whether the other guy scored or not. When he did score Defoe had a choice - sulk like a brat or cover it up. He went for the latter and it only worked when Gilberto let him off the hook and played one potato two potato with him.
Wasnt there something similar in a Prem game where someone faked a punch-up when taking a free-kick , and then slotted the ball in the net when the defenders were all staring at them wondering what was going on ?
