homer - top, top man, very real, hero! this might tickle you - in one "your man of the century?" survey, americans voted as follows: 1) joseph smith (silly mormon block voters) 2) jesus - the 20th century you bunch o' divies... in a similar uk survey, who came out top??? HOMER !!!!!! just highlights the difference between the two countries.

    Father Ted

    Del Boy
And just to pull out something a little obscure- Timothy Lumsden (Ronnie Corbett in TV series Sorry!)

Sorry, changed my mind - it won't make any difference to the voting because no one else has chosen him yet - but can I delete Timothy Lumsden and add the one and only Harold Steptoe.

The second line characters tend to be my favourites:

    The Major - Fawlty Towers
    Gil Chesterton - Frasier
    Puddy - Seinfeld
Murray Hewitt - Flight Of The Conchords
    Mr Mackay - Porridge

    David Brent
    Randy marsh (South Park)
    Partridge
Mike (from spaced) played by nick frost
    Mark corrigan (peep show)

If I could have a 6th, it would be Homer Simpson. Unfortunately the Simpsons ran out of ideas and the modern episodes have trailed off.

Very good classic comedy character regrettably not in my top 5.

    3. Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers)
    4. Father Dougal McGuire (Father Ted)

Though trying to pick five was a bit like deciding which arm would I most like to have chopped off!
