I Need Glasses !

  • I used to wear contact while playing golf to avoid the rain issues with specs,
  • Insert lenses that I missed,   I was going to say after years of wearing the contacts my eyes have improved slightly now I stick to glasses.
  • I've hit that time of life....10 hours a day working on a screen has finally taken it's toll at 46, have just picked up my first pair of varifocals - gonna take a bit of getting used to I reckon!!

not sure if I'd ever get on with contact lenses - any positive / negative experiences?
Most opticians will offer a trial of contact lenses for you to test them out. I didn't get on with them but have flatter eyeballs so could only use certain types. It also annoyed me that you still had to shell out for glasses alongside the cost of the lenses as you can't wear them all the time!
  • One thing Id certainly advise people going forward is look around online for your glasses now.

You can ask for a copy of your prescription when you go to Boots / Specsavers for your eye test

But its ridiculous how much you can save going through an online company now - e.g. I've got a designer pair of glasses that cost me about £150 in total, and thats because my prescription is really bad so need the extra thin lenses etc.

Had I done that through anyone like Specsavers, the frames alone would have been about £200
How do you try them for comfort and to see what you look like?

Some of them do allow for you to try before you buy so you can order the frame and return it if you dont like it.

Usually though I'll go into an opticians etc. have a browse of the frames and see which ones I like, then I'll take a picture of the code on the side of the frame and see if I can get it online for cheaper back at home.

It can be frustrating doing that though, went into Vision Express the other week to see if there was anything I liked, found a couple of pairs but when I got home, I found they were brands etc. that were limited to Specsavers etc. so you cant purchase elsewhere.
  • Had lens replacement surgery 6 year ago, best thing I could have done. I was getting through glasses every 18 months or so at £300/400 a time.

Always tickles me they tend to advertise the cost as per eye as if most people wont need / wont get both done together!
  • Oh man, I'm having a mare at the moment.
I had my eyes tested 18 months ago and I was told I needed a prescription for reading but my far sight was pretty much bang on.  Have started having loads of headaches so went back to get tested again a couple of weeks ago but my prescription hasnt changed.

I've been using cheap reading glasses I got from Amazon and they do the job but its so frustrating picking my phone up in the middle of the night then realising I can read it without my glasses.

When I was tested a few weeks ago, they said I dont need a prescription at all for distance, which makes varifocals a bit ridiculous considering for most things I dont need them but then I have to go grab a pair of glasses to pick something up and read it.  Grrr.

All the years of watching porn online and working with double monitors has caught up with me!

No different to finding something on the Currys website and seeing if you can find it cheaper elsewhere ;)

In all seriousness, the cost of glasses is one of the biggest frustrations / piss takes for me, so wouldn't care even if it was frowned upon
  • How Spanners think of Charlton fans.

  • How'd you get that photo of me down in Cornwall the other week?

To be fair I'm one of those people who you can call about 50 times and I'll barely twig that its me being called

Although in my defence I was probably busy jotting those train numbers in my little book of trains ;)
