    Ah yes, thanks.
  • You'll walk into the watermans arms and hear a mighty roar.............

    What a song that was.

The pub opposite used to be alright. Shame it went. What was it called again?

The Watermans went in the early 90's, a cracking little pub.

Yes it was. I worked in there briefly as a barman when I was at uni - John and Shirley owned it then.
  • The Victoria is a pretty sorry sight, when did that close? Strange that it's been left on the corner to (literally) rot, I took these photos on Tuesday

  • Good photos - what a pity the distinctive Truman's signage and plaster eagle can't be saved. When I walked past, the facade on the Woolwich Road was leaning backwards.
  • It's a lovely building and would have a steady client base of technology college students if it reopened

When you walked in towards the bar, if felt like you were pissed, also the pool table had bricks under it, to level it.

These seem to be the latest plans, the building itself seems to be listed

    When you say listed?

Interesting, though you'd think it's too far gone to be saved. Have a look at the fourth comment following the article: references to the Victoria's role in early CAFC, written in a mescaline-fuelled stream of consciousness akin to Jack Kerouac.

Group of us from Charlton used to turn out for them on a Sunday morning.
    Great times.
Fred (Karluke? Sp.) used to run it.
    Great bloke, and great memories.
Used to stay open on a Sunday when it was early closing elsewhere.

Remember on Sunday meeting there for a game but having no transport. He threw the keys to his transit out the window and said "if it comes on top, don't forget to take the keys out if you have it on your toes".
Had a cup game once, losing 3-0 at H/T, treble substitution involving Wayne Burnett (Blackburn) and David Hillier (Arsenal). Smashed them the second half.

Oh to turn the clock back 25 years...

Frequented by Peter Sutcliffe......The Yorkshire Ripper, on a number of occasions when he was a lorry driver.
  • Should be forced to have a pub on the premises imo

Remember going in there during the prem days and watching porn films on the telly -  not sure why they didnt show the lunchtime matches  but the porn was much more fun ;-)
  • Same thing, 45 minutes each way and a cuppa at the break.

You’re forgetting the toss beforehand and changing ends half way through.
  • And the custard creams.
  • Humpers for goalposts
  • If the pub on the corner is worth 3 mill - how much would The Valley be worth ?
    It's the RD exit strategy.
  • The pub has planning permission - The Valley doesn’t.

ill be surprised if it sells for that price,

They will try to sell it, it won't sell, then they will try to change its usage for flats. This won't be approved, sometime later it will go up in flames, then it will have flats built on the ground.
And that is exactly what will happen.
    Corruption rules unfortunately
  • Think Brentford have still got pubs on most corners on each road near there ground
