Nigel Farage (because that is what UKIP is, one man) has a charisma and a resemblance of the common man that none of the major parties have, as well as letting people know that if they disagree with the Guardian, they are not a raving racist.
I will not vote for UKIP, but I understand entirely their appeal, as well has how counter productive it is to constantly mock and slag off their voters.
If you tell someone their views are wrong in an adversarial way, you often end up reinforcing them, whereas if you invite people to change them through a reasonable conversation, you are much more likely to win them over.
It frustrates me, as someone who does not want to see UKIP win seats because I don't want Ed Milliband in office (I could have voted for David, what a shame) that the way people handle UKIP is so asinine that all it does is improves their chances. People want to vote for someone who is not part of the status quo of exceptionally boring men, and want to stir up politics. The more Farage and UKIP are portrayed the way they are, the more people will flock to them in their droves.
