Bespoke tailoring

I really want to get a bespoke suit.

However, they are eye-wateringly expensive, unless I am on one of my now-infrequent trips to Hong Kong. So I have been looking at online tailors, which allow you to design and specify a suit, send in your measurements and they deliver a "bespoke" suit in a few weeks. So far I have only tried this with shirts. Does anyone have any experience with either this type of tailor? Or, does anyone use a traditional tailor that doesn't cost as much as a low-mileage family car?

the tailor I use in Bkk does on line and also travels to the UK a couple of times a year. His suits are not very cheap but they last along time, in fact I still wear two of them that are 8yrs old and only buttons have needed replacing.

I had a 3 piece suit designed, made to measure and fitted from Moss Bros in Bluewater. Fantastic service, plenty of choice of colour / design / buttons / lining etc etc...went for the top of the range material and choices of lining, but did this in their January sale when it was 50% off, so I paid just under £400 in total for everything.

If you can hang on a bit then I'd highly recommend.

Brilliant. That's an incredible price. The only downside is that I am usually a different size in January, compared to any other month!

Small independent tailors would typically charge £500-700 for a made to measure depending on material. There's not many left but a search will unearth some good ones. No need to go to Saville Row!

Did exactly the same last year for a work suit. Great value but not as many bespoke measurements as you get from a more exclusive tailor. With Moss Bros you try on a nearest fit and the tailor adds and deducts from key measurements, and there is no interim fitting to get a perfect fit as you do with a full blown bespoke. Depends if you want to achieve perfection or something better than off the peg.

Sorry to insert a few words from a sartorial pleb. For some time now I have gone to M & S and purchased one jacket with two pairs of trousers ( like buying two suits ), great value for money. The secret is to wear a great tie, shine your shoes, and walk tall with a confident smile, it still works for me.

To compare prices it's really important to distinguish between made to measure - which is what the Moss Bros and send -away hong Kong deals are, and bespoke, which should be hand made by the tailor whose company you deal with. The trouble is that the prices for bespoke, at least with well known names, has been driven through the roof by the same people that have driven London property prices through the roof

Marks and spencer do a made to order service, which is the bridge between off the peg and made to measure. You have 1400 fabrics to choose from, the choice of fabric is the price you pay. All the customization is included in this price. Choose a half canvassed or fused construction (half canvas £50 more). Choose your lining and buttons, lapel, vents, pocket inscription...basically build your own suit personal to you. This starts from £499 up to £999 for a jacket and trouser. Extra trouser or waistcoats extra. I was lucky enough to do my own suit for free and it fits perfectly, I get an incredible amount of compliments when wearing this suit. Could not recommend any more!

I have got my last three suits from "Dressed to kill" at the Cut in Waterloo. They measure you when you pick the design and materials and then there is one fitting when you try it on and they made the required adjustments. I started off with and offer from the Evening Standard and just went and bought the other two. Paid between £350 and £550 for the suits all three piece and have been really happy with them.

Dressed to kill- Not sure how they are doing now but when i took up this offer about 3 years ago, they were so small and obviously took on too much. I was working near there so could keep returning the required number of times, sometimes owing to admin errors. The end product was a not too impressive customised suit without the feel good or bargain feeling!

Absolutely brilliant suits, great fit and very, very fast turnaround. You set up your account with all your measurements then just design the suit(s) based on a pretty big choice of fabrics, colours, linings etc. It takes about two weeks from sending your order to the DHL delivery arriving from China. And if there is anything wrong with the fit, you can take it to a local tailor and send them the bill!

I will be ordering more.
