A sad sight for Young's drinkers.

  • More residential for London is not a bad thing, however I suspect Chinese developers with a Chinese government flavour means expensive apartments to be sold in the Far East. Let's see. What is amazing is that for the developer this is a small development, as in China they build towns! And...they are only one of something like 19 similar Chinese companies all with a stated desire to get into London Real Estate.
  • I will add that Young's London Ale, despite being brewed in Bedford, is among the best, and certainly the best value, of the bottled UK beers that I can find in Thailand. Being bottle conditioned, it does allow me to get a taste of English beer every so often rather than the array of Thai lagers available everywhere. Many more are available but either prohibitively expensive or bland. Fullers bottled beers not nearly as good, and despite being brewed at the same place, the Wells beers are also bland. I occasionally treat myself to one of the St Austell bottles but at nearly a fiver in the local specialist supermarket it is much too expensive.
  • Remember drinking Youngs "ramrod and special" at the Railway Bell off of Westow Hill, Crystal Palace many years ago. It was also a pub that the late Frank Carson frequented on occasions.
  • Never enjoyed anything brewed by Charles Wells. I always avoid their brand. Shame to lose that old Young's brewery but a sign of the times. This has reminded me of a works beano there for the brewery tour in the 70s (but not a clear memory - it was bedlam, especially on the coach back) I think you had a couple of free sample pints and could then go on and buy as much as it took to send you comatose. Come to think of it might have been a pub outing not a works beano. I'd all but forgotten it.

and China is now dotted with unused, never lived in ghost towns .. Is Wandsworth and/or London in general going the way of (e.g.) Vancouver, where 90% of new developments are bought up lock, stock and loftspace by the Chinese ?
