    Surely they would have had to pay the remainder of his contract up had they released him? Besides that, should he have had to retire through it, they would have claimed some kind of medical compensation.

    You can't just release someone from their contract for nothing unless it's mutually agreed. As Mr Otto says they'd have to pay the remainder of contract or come to an agreement.
