David Hillier

Been on Talksport this evening and mentioned us a couple of times

He lived in Greenwich and was at both Charlton and Millwall youth teams(he said back then you could play for 2 youth teams)

He also said that when he signed his first pro contract he was on the verge of signing for Charlton but Eddie Heath died just before and he did not want to play for us if Heath was not there, so he signed for Millwall and then went on to play 104 games for Arsenal

interesting as well he said when he was younger his dad followed both Charlton and Millwall so he did as well.

    What's he up to now?

Watch it @Draizetrain‌ will be after you.
  • Decent squad player for Arsenal then just seemed to disappear.
  • Failing a drugs test and then getting done for stealing posh luggage at Gatwick didn't exactly enamour him to the Arsenal establishment.

Lived next door to me in West Greenwich til his career began to take off, and played for our School team - John Roan. Him and Nicky Love were in the year above me, Wayne Burnett also went to my school (i think) and lived nearby. Think thats all of my football/school connections :)

Reading wikipedia, sounds like he was really unlucky in terms of appearing in finals. Missed 3 through injury (the League/FA double in 92/3 and the UEFA CWC in 94). Only final he did appear in was the '95 CWC against Real Zaragoza.

He mentioned that as well and was saying he did not mind because it meant that when they one he was in the stands with his family drinking champagne, and he still feels he contributed to the win.

He also mentioned that Cup Winners cup saying that when they got back to the dressing room after the game they had a present, it was a watch box but he was so angry he threw it on the floor and smashed it, he then found out it was a really nice and expensive watch engraved with Arsenal v Zaragoza, so he waited till one of the subs went into the shower and swapped boxes with him

Suspect you enjoyed the '95 final.
  • The "where is he now?" article I read in the Guardian was a good read. Comes across as very humble and down to earth. Funny how his wife suggested he joined the Fire Brigade as it would be like a dressing room in the Fire Station.

No. But I was best man for his wife's cousin.

  • Listened to the first ten minutes or so last night. Sounded like a decent bloke, I like that show. The presenters are doughnuts but some of the guests are brilliant. Had Chris Sutton on a couple of weeks ago and he was very funny. Terry butcher before that professionals from the era that probably just missed the boat with the insane contracts are normally decent people and much more interesting than your modern day soundbite pro's

Yeah he does have a few medals, I remember going over to their house in welling when I was a kid and seeing them. He also gave me a shirt that he swapped in one of the European games. I think it was against benfica and it still has the paint from the lines on it!

I had forgotten all about that stuff! Even now I only vaguely remember it.
  • He used pop in the Bugle horn before Lee took over iirc.

Those people used to get 5% of transfer fee as signing on fee, and a guaranteed wage rise at the end of a contract if they re-signed. Considering average top league wages in the late 80's were £250,000, they still earned astronomically higher than the average man.

Admittedly Hillier was probably screwed in wages by George Graham, as written about by Lee Dixon and others, whilst Graham robbed the club on both sides. But any of them could have bought a new house every time they moved; just read Steve Claridge, if you had a market value you earnt well every move.

    Do you miss playing?

No. I've still got my connections with football: I manage Oldland Abbotonians in the Western Divison One. It's not a bad standard of football and I've got the banter and all that. I suppose I do miss the £70-80 grand a year though. But you know, that's life. It's not a problem, I love doing what I'm doing. If they paid a few million more it would be even better.
  • I don't know what's wrong with me. I keep reading the title as "David Hitler".
  • Sat next to his dad at Welling many moons ago when David was playing for Arsenal reserves against us.
He wanted to know who our young centre half was who had a certain Andrew Cole in his pocket.
Anyone want to guess who it was ?
  • Is it Eddie Youds or maybe Richard Rufus?

  • Has to be Rufus
