No laptop will ever overheat because of its hard drive. Furthermore, a new laptop mechanical hard drive costs about £40 and can be replaced in 40 seconds.
If your laptop is getting hot, it is almost certainly a problem with the fans or there is a large build up of dust within the machine which is causing the CPU to overheat.
If you do feel the need to replace it, stick with an Intel processor and get something with, at the very minimum, 4gb of ram.
yeah I thought that was strange, my parents took it to pc world while I was away and that was what he said... could you recommend somewhere to take it to have it looked at?
I mean it's not impossible but it sounds extremely unlikely. I've had hard drives spinning for 7-8 years and they've never overheated!
How do you know it's overheating by the way? Does the laptop suddenly turn off and a BIOS warning show up?
Yeah that's exactly what happens. Looking to buy a new one anyway as the battery lasts all of 30 seconds (don't even keep it connected now) and only lasted 2.5 hours when new 5 years ago

Wanted an ssd but couldn't find any for my price range that don't have major flaws like the touch pad on the Acer aspire v3 371
