Quick Car Insurance question

  • I've been speaking to the insurance company with the dog that has a name like a 2nd world war PM.... This is their stance...

If you drive to a station or to your primary fixed place of work, that is covered under Social, Domestic and Pleasure. In other words, commuting is included in SD&P.

However, if you need to drive as part of your job, for example you need to drive to other locations as part of your role, you need to insure for Business Use.

In addition, if you have 2 jobs you will also need Business Use as you will essentially have more than one fixed place of work.

Changing your policy from SD&P to Business Use typically costs nothing extra. If you have 2 jobs, make sure your insurers know. Again, does not cost any extra.

Also, if you are the policy holder for one car and a named driver for another vehicle on a different policy, you'll potentially need that policy also changed to Business Use.

If you open a policy with Churchill via an online quote, the policy is now automatically setup as Business Use. This may not be the case if you opened your policy via an online quote a few years ago. Check your documentation.

Hope this is useful. Remember, different insurance companies may have a different approach so best speak to your insurers.

Churchill is, of course part of the Direct Line Group - as is Privilege and Green Flag for that matter.

I'm someone who changes insurer pretty much every year to get the cheapest price. If - as it seems - they are no longer issuing more appropriate bespoke policies, that goes some way towards explaining why their quotes are as far from competitive as you can get for someone like me who doesn't need commuting or business use.

BTW, Mrs cafcfan was going to do some volunteer charity work a few years ago - that's till she found out how much extra her insurers wanted to add business use to her motor policy!

The golden rule seems to be check your policy and certificate of insurance wording!
  • Mr. Lung, someone hit your car an no note was left. Are you sure it happened when you were parked at the station and not at some time when perhaps your car was parked outside your house?

You shouldn't lie of course, but be sure of your facts before you open a commuting can of worms. As others have said, insurance companies will wriggle off the hook if they spot the slightest half-chance. They don't own the moral high ground.
  • Or indeed are you quite sure it was that day and not the day after you arranged to add commuting to correct an oversight? ;-) (definitely not encouraging this but the difference in premium really is negligable).
