You can be jailed in the US for being drunk in public. But over here.....

A council benefits assessor who fraudulently claimed more than £32,000 in benefits has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Anthony McHale, 56, was responsible for processing and managing housing benefit claims for Wolverhampton City Council.

He created six aliases, approved their benefit "applications" and diverted the money into his own bank account, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

He was sentenced to 20 months in jail, suspended for two years.

McHale, from Brad Lane North in Willenhall, must also pay back the money and do 300 hours of unpaid work.

Exactly - non violent offender, not a danger to the public. Neither is the drunk. The US jailing people for next to nothing might be considered the ones out of order?

And don't forget that MPs don't mind making a dodgy claim or two themselves, that might have an influence on sentences in this kind of case?

Out of order not to jail someone who has stolen £32000 of our money from the poorest of society whilst in a position of authority.
Remind me not to live in your new world!
    ;-)
At least a couple of MP's were sent to jail? (I think)
This poxy sentencing merely encourages this sort of thing, Ted.
