What it means to love Charlton

Told to me this morning. My personal trainer was asked to help a young Down's Syndrome do some light exercise and improve his fitness. He said it was one of the most fulfilling things he had ever done. At the gym ( in Bromley ) a West Ham player also trained. This is unfortunate, my trainer is not a football fan and doesn't know the players name, he thinks it was Dean? This is the Tevez team and I don't know who he is referring to. Anyway, the Downs Syndrome boy is a football fan and recognised the player. Bob ( trainer ) said the boy got so excited he almost had a seizure. Bob approached the player who came across and spoke to the young lad. Over a few months the player took a real interest in the lad and eventually one day he put his arm around the boy and said as long as it was ok with his parents he would take him to Upton Park to meet the players and watch a match. The lad explained to the player he was a Charlton supporter and there was no way he could possibly be disloyal and go to West Ham. No amount of persuasion ever worked, and the boy never went to Upton Park.
Lovely story and I will try and find out who the player was.

Having spent years going with my old man - The Valley, Selhurst, Upton Park, Back to The Valley and i've never wanted to follow another club.  It's just not in me.  My Dad was one of the urchins who used to climb over the fence at the top of the old east terrace or watch from trees etc and he always regretted that his father wasn't in to football at all - which is why he took me along because it was a nice bonding experience.

    I'm glad he did

I took my son from less than a year old but he made it clear he is just not in to football so he doesn't come but instead my daughter joins me at every game.  She has loads of autographs, an unhealthy obsession with Josh Edwards, Zach Mitchell and Miles Leaburn, numerous shirts and actually complains about our seats in the Director's Box because she wants to be in the Covered End with the drums.  At the play-off final last year she refused to join us in our box as she wanted to be in the thick of it.  I was on crutches at the time and recovering from surgery so couldn't do it but she went with a mate and my wife who HATES football.  They had a great day - as did we all.

It occasionally brings a tear to my eye even now to see how excited she gets when we score.  It's hard to explain but that's what it means to support Charlton if you ask me.

She passed her driving test last week and we already have a few road trips in mind for next season - just me and my little girl.  I can't bloody wait!

It means that far too many Saturday evenings and some weekday ones are completely ruined for me. I give far too much thought time to our situation for my own good. However. Once in a while something happens that lights up my life in a way that not much else possibly could. My uncle took me to The Valley when I was five in 1961 and apart from these last five years I’ve been a regular. Sometimes I think it’s a curse but actually it’s a wonderful gift to be an Addick.
