Went in July bit not with a kid. Lima is a bit scuzzy, but cuzco and macchu Picchu are amazing (but very high altitude) and so is lake Titicaca. We went with Tucan tours... I'd think about organising some trips before heading out as travel can be a bit awkward. Also went to the Amazon jungle, which was absolutley incredible

great country but as mcbobbin says: get out of Lima asap.

Huaraz is pretty nice if you're into mountains etc.

Can't offer you advice regarding going in August or with a 5 year old. But can echo what has been said about Lima and also Cuzco.

I've been fortunate to visit a lot of South America and would rank Peru as one of the best places.

No expert on taking kids on holiday, however been to Peru. The altitude could be a problem the one thing that we did that you could do with a little one was the train ride from Puno (on Lake Titicaca...check out the reed islands) to Cusco fantastic scenery. Not sure about the weather in August we was there in June/July which generally was fine. Inca trail with a five year old is a no no unless you are upto carrying them, though there is a train from Cuzco to Machu Pichu (we got that back after the hike). Cuzco was pretty good and believe it or not we didn't mind Lima though we wasn't there that long (only doing an organised city tour).....good luck with taking the little one probably better places to take a small child though what you will find is that they (latin Americans in general) are very family orientated and if you do your research you will have a good time.

I wouldn't take a 5 year old ........ it'll be too much for them at that age, wait until they're older and stronger - and can appreciate the trip.

Take the 5 year old where they can enjoy themselves and have fun.

Thanks for all the responses. Think Oggy has summed up my concern. The little 'un may appreciate it more when she is older and happy to hike. The Cusco / Puno train ride I had on my list, and looked cool though.

I have done a fair bit of South and Central America but we are tied to a August holiday, which is an issue for a lot of the countries.

@ricky_otto I'd be interested in your recommendations beyond Peru. Ta.

Scuzzy: Does that mean bad? I am assuming it does but cannot be sure!

For instance I know it is trendy amongst you youngsters to use the word 'sick' as something good these days whereas to me it means 'vomit' or 'depraved'.

It was a great train journey, one for the future if you don't go this August.

If you book through a company like Intrepid or Immaginative Traveller they can do specialist family trips & may be able to advise re age of child & August.
We did Peru in February. Lima is ok if you stick to the main tourist areas. You'll never know how the altitude will affect anyone until you get there so I don't see waiting would make a huge difference but you know your kid best.
We were in Costa Rica a year ago & I'd be happy to take a five year old there. Loads for them to do & is a fabulous place.

When I last used that word in the 1980s it meant a bit mucky and grim. These days its probably a high compliment!

I did an organised tour from Peru through to Rio, then made my way back across to Santiago in Chile. I'm sure a 5 year old would still have fun, but the travelling is usually by coach and the distances are huge. Plus, the local driving is shit (though me and Len want to know of that's still bad...) So never, ever sit at the front, its like a funfair ride with almost certain death thrown in.

If it was me I'd consider somewhere like Mendoza in Argentina, and maybe iguazu and Buenos Aires as well. Can do loads in Mendoza and the food and wine is great!
