Advice needed - Hamstring injury

About 3 weeks ago I pulled my muscle on my right leg playing 5 a side football and I was limping for a few days. 3 weeks on, it is a lot better and I am walking normally but at certain movements (particularly crouching down) it feels a slight bruise hurt. Sometimes my knee cap feels like it is rubbing at certain movements as well.

Today, I decided to play football again but in goal. I then came out and played on field for about 15 minutes and I coped ok but my knee still felt a little vulnerable but it did not hurt at all.

Is there anyone who posts on here who has experienced a similar injury or is an expert at sport injuries can advise me what is the best way to treat it and what exercises can I do to strengthen my right leg? I was thinking of doing some leg work at the Gym but I am slightly hesitant to do that.

  • Hamstring you have to rest mate. People think if their hammy is tight they need to keep stretching it, but if the muscle is damaged then it simply needs time to repair.

    Your knee could be your meniscus, which is basically ligament and cartilage. Its very common in football and you should let it rest then support it when you play again. If it carries on then go see your doc and he can refer you for MRI scan cos you could need a small keyhole op to sort it out.

  • If it is a hamstring injury. Work on back strengthening exercises. A lot of hamstring injuries are relate to lower back issues. Although with knee stability issues I would wonderful if one of the hip abductors is the culprit rather than a hamstring. See a sports injury specialist if you want some detailed help/advice.
  • Ice ice and more ice on your hamstring (better late than never). You probably need a physio session to smooth out any scar tissue (painful but worth it).

    I had an op similar to what you are talking about...basically my right leg jolted when I straightened it, had an MRI scan that revealed a small cartlidge tear, which was repaired using key hole. No problems since though ocassionally I do suffer with tendernitis on the inside of the leg just below the knee joint at the goose-foot...which is the common name for the Pes Anserinus (basically where 3 major tendons meet).....stretching and ice helps to eleviate the problem.

    Don't do any stretching, just stick on a pair of steel toe cap boots and go out for a sprint if that hurts then there is a good chance its fucked

  • Pnf is an exercise for hammys. Place heel on a low chair or table with straight leg then exert downward pressure and hold for ten seconds. Then bend over to stretch hamstring and repeat. Also prone leg curls (with heel) helps. Your knee sounds unrelated.

  • Hmm, sounds like a problem with the "Sartorius" muscle. Is connected to the knee. Don't underestimate this injury (as I did last summer), 'cause it's the longest muscle of the human body.
