Songs that aren't what they seem...

I just explained to a colleague that Every Breath You Take is not a love song, but a stalker-ish thing, she had no idea (I thought we all knew this!). What other songs are not about what they appear to be? It always fascinates me when I find stuff like this out.

  • House of fun- Madness
  • The Drugs Don't Work.
I thought it was about recreational drugs, but I understand its about Richard Ashcrofts mother who had cancer.
  • Secret Smile by Semisonic

    Turning Japanese by The Vapours
  • Bubbly by Colbie Caillat-is a song about an orgasm
  • Believe it is a myth about Turning Japanese.
  • No woman No Cry - Bob Marley

Thought it was to say that without women there would be no hurt hence no tears from him, but it is more, 'please dont cry love' to the woman.
  • Your Gorgeous by Babybird. Went to a funeral once where they played this in memory of the deceased!
  • Lola - The Kinks

I had no idea what it was about when I first heard it as a 13 year old!
  • Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen - often gets mistaken for a piece of flag waving USA patriotism but is actually anything but.

  • Hey Mr Tangerine Man by Dylan is actually about Jose Riga Baby

  • REM's The One I Love is very cynical and not remotely romantic.

One that I always think of.
  • golden brown by the stranglers is about heroin.

Well I never knew that. Although I never could understand what the lyrics meant. It makes sense now.

Same as Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Actually about Roger Waters coming down with Flu whilst on tour and the doctor trying to get him in a state to go on stage.

Don't stand So Close To me - Teacher & school girl
    Roxanne - Prostitute
Be My Girl - Blow Up Doll

I could never understand how Sting wasn't visited by Operation Yew Tree. Allegedly.

    I've got your picture
    Of me and you
    You wrote "I love you"
    I wrote "me to"
I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do

    Oh it's in color
    Your hair is brown
    Your eyes are hazel
    And soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I've like a million of you over myself
I asked the doctor to take a picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down and turning in and
    turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I've like a million of you over myself
I want the doctor to take a picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down and turning in and
    turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so

No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women
No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark
Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a psyched lone ranger
    Everyone

    That's why I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I
    really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so

Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
(think so think so think so)
Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so
