A driver notches up 15951 miles on his milometer and realises that this number is palindromic, reading the same backwards and forwards. He feels pleased to have noticed such a rare occurrence and is thus doubly surprised when exactly 2 hours later, another palindromic number appears, how fast was he driving?

    I think you will find the 2nd palindromic number was actually 38283 and he had been driving at 11166mph.

    Two amoebas are placed in water in a test tube. They reproduce by splitting themselves in two, a process that takes five minutes. After 4 hours they have filled the test tube. How long will it take a single amoeba in an indenticsl quantity of water in an identical test tube to do the same?

    In a room full of war pensioners, if 70% have lost an eye, 75% an ear, 80% an arm and 85% a leg, what percentage at least must have lost all four?

    I haven't worked this out yet, from yesterdays Guardian:

    There are five houses with the outside walls painted in five different ways. David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel each live in one of the houses. They each drink a certain type of coffee, have a preferred mode of transport and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, the same preferred mode of transport or drink the same type of coffee.

    Nicola lives in the tartan house.
    Ed has a guinea pig
    David drinks mochaccino
    The paisley house is on the left of the gingham house
    The owner of the paisley house drinks flat whites.
    The person who drives by car has a squirrel.
    The owner of the striped house travels by bike.
    The person living in the centre house drinks double espresso.
    Nick lives in the first house.
    The person who travels by train lives next to the one who has a pitbull.
    The person who has a badger lives next to the person who travels by bike.
    The person who travels by plane drinks chai latte.
    Nigel goes everywhere by foot.
    Nick lives next to the polka dot house.
    The person who travels by train has a neighbour who drinks decaf.

    WHO OWNS THE FISH?

    For the sake of clarity: the houses are adjacent to each other in a line and the directions are from the perspective of someone looking at the houses. And any resemblance of David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel to the party leaders is purely coincidental. You have to solve this problem by logic, not by having had a coffee with any of them.

    Yep 30% have eyes, 25% ears, 20% arms and 15% legs so at most 90% have got something so at least 10% have nothing.
