Oh East London is full of sh*t...

Massive strike by Barking and Dagenham binmen has seen some people not having their rubbish collected since early April. Roads are piled up with bin bags ripped from rats and foxes and rubbish everywhere.

Anyone on here being affected?

Regardless of the strike (binmen facing a £1k pay cut), surely it's a health hazard and the council has a responsibility to contract out the collections?

I wouldn't think anyone would notice the difference in Barking.

Charlton is more in the East of London than South..............

And I thought the smell wafting across the Thames was from the porn merchants and dildo salesmen at the Boleyn...

My office is based in Canary Wharf and I often go running before or after work around The Isle of Dogs/Poplar/Tower Hamlets. There always seems to be piles of rubbish and litter absolutely everywhere.

I'm not sure if the councils in East London only pick up once or twice a month or the locals just throw things out onto the street all of the time, but it seems to be common thing if Barking is the same.

One of the chaps on the desk here lives by Millwall park (near Island Gardens) and reckons people often just throw their rubbish into the street (often from their balcony). He once said he almost got hit by a dirty nappy that was thrown from the 4th floor of a nearby block of flats.

Disgusting if true. I must state though, I have never seen this happen whilst out pounding the pavements of East London.

as far as i was aware it wasnt actually a pay cut. They wanted to reduce overtime before shifts (which are used to check the vehicles). obviously this would stop overtime payments, but isnt actually a pay cut per se.

What would you call it then ?

It ia not a cut - Their wages are the same.

They just won't be getting overtime

They will be earning less money = pay cut.

    Er no.

So if you got an annual bonus each year, say in March, when you get your normal pay in April is that a pay cut ?

No it is your normal salary.

They are still getting the same basic salary.
They are just not getting OVERtime. Over as in extra.

I would hazard a guess that the council concerned is Labour run ? and has more committee/cabinet members than Parliament has to run the whole country, most of whom are absolutely useless unless the issue is an 'ism' .. mere mundane tasks like organising street cleaning and waste/garbage collection are an impediment to the real task of jaw jaw and claiming expenses

If my overtime suddenly got cut I'd want to go on strike too. Bear in mind what a shitty job that must be these guys are volunteering their own time (granted being paid for it) beyond their basic hours to earn about 90 quid a month before tax on average. So unless this is a 'you always book an extra couple of hours on a Friday but go early anyway' situation they are looking at a pay cut in real terms.

My job is only worth doing because of the overtime and I have to work fucking hard for it. If they took that away without giving me decent people to remove the need for overtime I'd be in favour of striking

Amd yes the council does have a duty to collect refuse. It is one of the front line essential services you pay council tax for. If that means Co - ordinators, managers and other unaccountable council middle management have to do it and get dirty then so be it

But overtime is not guaranteed. It is extra as and when required. If you are asked to work your normal allocated hours you have no right to complain.

Yeah, i live in Dagenham. There is a car park you take your bags to. You are up shit creek without any transport though. About 16 bags piled up at the end of the road this morning.
