The next young Academy player to get in the 1st team is on a hiding to nothing.
It will be like David Moyes who took over from Fergie.
We will back to the Morgan Fox senario for the next new kid on the block.

Yes but Morgan Fox has actually been a success, maybe not a sensation, but a success nonetheless.

Agreed, Morgan Fox has done fine,
but was slated by at least 50% of CL,
who expect young players to be up to speed straight away.

    Back to Joe Gomez.
In the last 40 years, the only players who have been outstanding at such a young
age has been Paul Walsh, Paul Elliott, Lee Bowyer,Paul konchesky, and Jonjo Shelvey, all making there debuts at 16 or 17 because they were good enough.
Robert Lee and Scott Parker were 18 when they started to mature.
Chris Solly, Diego Poyet, and Carl Jenkinson had injuries and illness, which stopped them doing like wise at 16 or just 17.
Scott Minto and Richard Rufus were quite young as well when making debuts.
KAG made his debut at 17, this was unfair on the kid because it was at least a year too early. This was because of the thin squad.

This is from memory not google ,so may have left someone out.

The point is Players like Joe Gomez come along very rarely, so i hope we got the best deal possible, i wish Katrien would tell me and not the guess work of fans.

No one else has said this yet?

I hope in the next 5 years that no one from our academy is as good as Joe Gomez??? ( poor Soapboxsam, a chocolate flake short of a 99)

    Let me explain.

I want Kag or Edwards or Holmes- Dennis to be Good.

I want them to be good enough to play for Charlton, but not good enough to be sold before they have played 30 games for CAFC or worse like Defoe, before they play a 1st team game.

I don't want us just to be a nursery team for the Premiership teams.

  • If we don't get to the prem then even the just good ones will be gone due to the home grown rule unfortunately

What we need is to go up and stay up if you want to.see these kids stay

Understand where you're coming from Sam, but between £2m and £5m a pop every couple of years would come in pretty handy.

Talking this through with my Dad today the conversation turned to who has also been the best player to come out the academy over the last few years. Hands down for me, although he hasn't moved onto a Prem club, Solly wins in my opinion. But for that injury and I think some misguided opinions about his height, he would be doing a job in the prem. He remains one of the best players we have produced.

Gomez, Poyet, Jenkinson, Shelvey. Over 100 games in a Charlton shirt. Over 10m raised? Money in the clubs coffers or keep the good youngsters and build a team with them as the core?

    Shelvey 49

    105 games

Would have been a slow midfield with Poyet and Shelvey as first choice pairing.

Would have paid money to see them though.

Youth players seeing their mate Gomez go to Liverpool is great. It gives them a massive incentive. It gives our academy a good reputation too. We are in a good position and people need to realise it.

Recently they've also seen Palmer go to Chelsea and Poyet go to Wham, which didn't particularly please people.

Jonjo to Lpool, Jenko to Arsenal
