Best place you've found to sell your car?

Just wondered what Lifers have found to be the best site/ method to sell their cars?
I've got an ad on Pistonheads ( I'm selling a vx220 turbo) and apart from a weird response from someone in France, I haven't had a single enquiry, and I don't think I've got the price too high or anything.
Looking online people have suggested Autotrader ( with a mail box) or EBay. Anyone on here used either of those to sell their cars and any good/ bad experiences or bits of advice?
Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Never tried piston heads to sell, when I had performance fords it was a good source of parts besides ford main dealers. You have what they call a 'specialist motor' so auto trader may be a bit of a long shot. I have had some great results from Gumtree in selling cheaper cars, of course it is very price critical, but free. Do your research, I am about to sell a BMW 'm sport' 1 series, loads about, with high high mileage, and quite a few been 'ragged' and cat 'c'. Been offered £9,300 by one of these cash for car sites, but heard that they knock you...... so going to put it up for £9,600, as dealers are trig to get £10,000-£12,000 Do find fsh a major plus point with low mileage . Good luck, find ebay a bit of a waste of time, but just my experience, as I say dependent on car.

Thanks Ken. As you say it's a unique and pretty rare car now so it might well attract a few timewasters if I go for the wider advertising. But at the end of the day I want to sell it. Have heard good and bad about E Bay and Autotrader and just wondered what people's experiences were like from on here.
    Good luck selling yours :-)

Had to google what car it was as never heard of it. Came across this site on the listing but don't know if you can advertise on it http://www.vx220.org.uk/forums/

Sold my Chrysler grand voyager on gum tree. Had to drop the price by £500 before I found buyers, then no problems.

For my tuppence worth, I wouldn't buy a performance car privately. Would always go through a specialist dealer as the dealer will ensure everything is working properly with the car. Would rather pay the extra £1k in this case for more security in the deal. I don't know how to spot a good car as opposed to a bad one though so don't want to get mugged off by the seller.

Very fair point, which is why a full service history is so Important. Your local garage may well be excellent, and I have one that I and quite a few friends use, of course it is a considerable saving, and my current car is hardly a high performance. Trouble is I find specialist dealers really have a premium on there prices. But I do agree, no point thinking you have a bargain , and then you spend a small fortune 2 months later.........

Sold my CLK via Ebay a few years back, I was quite pleased with the price I got until the bill come through from Ebay, can't remember how much exactly but remember thinking that's the last time I sell a motor on there.

Autotrader/Gumtree .. everyone looks there .. or why not try an auction .. put a decent reserve price on and see what happens

Good point re auctions but I think the price you can get for your car tends to be a fair bit lower than other avenues of sale. I think that might be one to consider if I just can't shift it via an ad!

Autotrader to start with, plus advert in window of car and attend an enthusiasts rally for an afternoon.
    Get onto their forums too.

Or break it and sell each bit on ebay - big profit but a right time-consuming pain in the butt!

I've used We Buy Any Car Twice. As long as you are honest on the quote request they are ok in my opinion.

On both occasions we were offered £500+ more than part-ex.

Could probably have got a bit more via a private sale but the trade off is We Buy Any Car is hassle free - take the car in, settle on the price, get paid 2-3 days later.

My mate sells vehicles on ebay and uses a classified ad which i think is £15 for 28days
    No extras after the sale
The only problem with ebay is the amount of questions you have to answer!

    That does not sound excessive.
Thanks for the info and the ideas everyone. I'm going to give the piston head ad a few more days then have a rethink if still no enquiries.

They're usually Charlton fans. So you're right... It is a life sentence.

I've sold all my old cars on auto trader. Ebay is good for buying stuff, not so great for selling bigger items such as motors
