Did Waterloo station...

Used to have a road / taxi rank running across concourse ?!

Comments

  • Yes. Got rid of it in the late 80s.
  • Paddington did and kings x had one to the side nr platform one. Don't remember Waterloo having one.

Thank you. Pub row being lost here as no one can find a picture as proof!
  • Where did it move from in the 80s and where did it move to. Can you tell me where the cabs ran into the concourse from.
  • Cab row pick up has always been where it is now. The stage door drop off as it was once known. Or the steps for the later platform numbers. Pick ups could never have been made from the concourse as there was no access. I think you are getting confused with paddington or euston.
  • I'm sure there's a scene in OFAH when Del meets Raquel for the first time under the clock at W'loo where this is shown......I have approx 30 mins to prove it, or am lumbered paying off the tab!
  • There is one exit by the costa coffee on the top deck of the station. That is almost at the point if collection at the front if the main rank still to this day.
  • I think the layout change when they built the Eurostar Platforms.

Correct. The road is clear on that scene when Raquel meets Derek Duval
  • Thanks all. I'm not settling the tab.

  • Thank you @Dansk_Red tried that one as evidence earlier, but wasn't 'real enough'. OFAH to the rescue though
  • Yes they did ....When I was a teenager I was running full pelt and didn't see there was a curb, the drop down saw me fall and do my knee in... bastards...

Definitely remember it in Waterloo as a young kid mate. My old man used to work near the Old Vic and when I used to go up and see him I remember the road through the middle of the station.
  • Only vehicles ever on the concourse were Royal mail. Not been the case for some time. Cabs are unchanged, excluding a few years servicing Eurostar

The definitive film of what Waterloo used to look like is "Terminus" by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, etc.) - from 1961.

You can see pretty clearly at around 27' 40" that there are taxis driving through the station.

Some of the footage is staged, inc the prisoners being escorted - but I doubt they would have staged taxis driven through in a background shot, and there are other bits in the film where you can see them

  • There used to be a train link from Waterloo East to Waterloo, the pedestrian bridge runs above it.
  • That video looks conclusive to me. I stand corrected. Bit before my time is my excuse. Remember paddington euston and kings x all having ranks next to the trains.
  • Choo choooooo!!!

  • Dunno if this helps but this photo is what Waterloo was like when I moved to London in the mid 80s (photo is a bit user but I distinctly remember the road)
