EE - 2GB Data suddenly not enough?

I have an iPhone6.

Until about 5 months ago, I never hit my data cap of 2GB per month, usually hit around 1.3GB.
Then suddenly I started using 3-4GB per month.

Could possibly be all the facebook autoplay videos but you can't track where this new data is coming from via the phone.

I keep having to get the add-ons which cost a bomb. I have a year left on my 24 month contract, what are the chances of EE helping me out and giving me more data for a small price?

Do any of you use tons of data?

Typically I only use my phone in the 20min commute home from work, plus down the pub. The rest of the time I am on wifi. Seems like a lot of data to me.

How much are you paying for the add-ons?

I know the network I work for (not EE) allows you up to the next data threshold for a small extra cost, usually £3p/m. The only way you can find out if EE does something similar is by asking. :-)

In terms of my personal data usage, I sit around the 8-10GB per month range. And I bet about 7GB of that is porn CharltonLife.

2G is not nearly enough anymore and the phone companies know it . I have free 10G and i nearly hit that most months.

You can set the videos in Facebook to not autoplay, or to only autoplay when on wi-fi, if that is the cause of the problem. I know on Android it can break down data usage by app. If the iPhone can't do that (which is frankly poor) then there's surely an app available that can tell you what's using the data.

On iphone, settings, mobile data, then at the bottom is a list of apps, plus the amount of data used.

There you go, did think it would be a large and strange omission for that functionality not to be there.
  • I always fork out for unlimited data on 3. Total piece of mind.
  • Are you running IOS 9 ?

Check the Wifi Assit setting which is in the Mobile section. This is new and can use the mobile data when the WIFI signal is not sufficient

Also the Twitter app now plays videos by default which you can switch off if you use that App as well.

Sounds like that's the case I'd say.

    The only noticable apps are
    Facebook 2.8GB
    Snapchat 3.9GB
    Twitter 3.9GB
    Youtube 2.5GB

Presumably the data usage shown is from purchase as it gives no date. So over 12 months, thats only just over 1GB per month.
I know 2GB isnt much anymore but I spend most of time browsing on my PC so the phone doesnt get that much use.
What is strange how it just seemingly rocketed up one month around April.

The packages are £7.50 for 1Gb for 7 days approximately. Paying on average £60 per month at the moment.

Ta for the feedback. Setting twitter and facebook videos to WiFi only, hoping and expecting that to help a lot.

I've never looked back. You can set it to auto top up each month (so using it like a contract) or top up manually every month - which is great if you need more or less data/calls/texts month to month.

On O2's coverage, so pretty decent. And the sim is free, just sign up!

Switch to 3. I'm telling you, sticking with anyone else is just irrational. Best network by miles.

    Free 4G
Truly unlimited data if you need it
Can use your phone abroad in a lot of countries and texts/calls/data just comes out your allowance.

@MattD, seeing Buckshee's screenshot above reminded me that I've read somewhere on the web that Waze is a huge pull on mobile data.

Whereas the Facebook app is noted by Apple to be the biggest pull on iPhone battery life. They recommend uninstalling the app and browsing Facebook through the Safari browser.

    This and ditch the iPhone.

    You are dead right.
SIM only deal for £11 a month and you can use your package for free in the EU, USA and Australia.

Voda want £3 a day in EU and £5 a day rest of the world.
I have spent over 50 days out of the UK already this year and saved tons.

I went over to 3 just before I went to the USA for ten days in June , when I got back I had a text telling me that if I'd been with another network that would have added £2100 to my bill!

I'm changing back to giff gaff at the moment as you get unlimited 4G for £20 but next time I go abroad I'll go back to 3 for that trip.
  • I phoned up EE. Got lucky and was connected to an amiable fella who gave me an extra 5gb a month at no extra cost. Didn't even want the history of the argument I had with the conning sods in the EE store. It was probably his final day at work or something.

Yep, if they can do it for one they should do it for all. But I think I just got incredibly lucky.

I was on a similar contract, rang up EE and for about 5 pound a month more I am now on 20gb s data.

I found that Apple Music took a lot of my data.

Twitter as follows. Click on me. Select the settings cog and there should then be an option relating to video auto play. Set it to only on wifi.

Its buried a bit in Facebook but the above link should help.

Just read this - not sure if it will help you?

If you have data plan with a cap, it's probably a good idea if you dive into iOS 9's Settings and turn off WiFI Assist. The feature switches an iPhone's data connection to the mobile carrier when it's experiencing shoddy WiFi. If you have an unlimited data plan, it's great because it ends the need to turn off WiFi when the local connection goes south and you can no longer load that hilarious goat video you found. It's not so great when you have a pretty low data cap and it switches from WiFi to cell without your knowledge. If you're part of the latter group, head to Settings > Cellular then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to turn off WiFi Assist to keep your mobile carrier from taking all your money on your next bill.

There's no such thing as free porn on the internet.
  • I had the exact same thing with ee and 2gb of data, called them and they took a look at how many add ons I'd had to buy and they gave me 10gb for an extra 2 quid a month or something. Not too bad
