CHRIS CAIRNS .. Not Guilty of Perjury

Therefore all those who gave evidence against him must be guilty of perjury .. Cairns is a VERY lucky man and should be grateful to his jury who decided that he's a man who has escaped from the clutches of a very heavy conspiracy

  • Very lucky. Majority decision. Personally, I believe Vincent (and have spoken to many Kiwi friends who know him and know he was telling it how it was...). No point in prosecuting the witnesses, as no chance for them to be convicted by a jury.

Not really. Only two individuals claimed to have direct knowledge/conversations with Cairns over match fixing. All other witness statements came from people who had secondary information. Piss poor journalists and headline writers made out Ponting was aware of the potential match fixing, but this was not the case he was present at a phonecall and said himself a 'business proposition' was unremarkable and not of interest to him to ask about: hence he never reported the telephone conversation between Mccullum and Cairns.

Vettori was informed of Cairns's approach by Mccullum, but managed to get the dates wrong. Mccullum never reported the Indian fixing approach, only a later English one, and then years after reported it to the ICC. Mccullum's recall of events changed multiple times. The Judge summed up by saying the jury had to decide why Mcullum's evidence changed in every statement he made to police and anti-corruption officers; for a judge to do this, the statement changes McCullum gave, were being highlighted as dubious.

So in actuality only TWO people had direct accusations of match fixing against Cairns. Vincent's confused and rambling evidence, coupled with his mendacious past, meant it was highly unreliable. His wife's drunken interaction with Cairns can be disregarded if you find Vincent's statements unreliable. The other direct conversations by Mccullum were easily seen as dubious and self serving. Really the only lesson learnt is the pathetic journalism of the majority of papers on this case. And it's not Perjury if NONE of the others claimed direct knowledge of Cairns's match fixing.
  • Not so lucky recently - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/60270695

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns has been diagnosed with bowel cancer, six months after being left paralysed by a stroke.

Cairns, 51, was only discharged from hospital last week after suffering a stroke during heart surgery in August.

"Big shock and not what I was expecting after what was supposed to be a routine check-up,"

Cairns was briefly on life support and lost the use of his legs following the heart surgery in Sydney
