John Taylor from Duran Duran didn't play bass on the initial studio albums he was too pony it was session men.

    Source?

I've seen reviews of early Duran duran live shows, and his playing was highly rated. John Taylor himself have mentioned how he likes the track Rio as the bassline made his reputation, which hardly ties with session players being involved
Sorry, people I know in the business, its common knowledge (allegedly), and John Taylor would say that wouldn't he.
There was an interview in NME in the 80's with Duran Duran and John Taylor said he has no idea what strings he uses, but he knows what shirt he is wearing at the gig. He really was pony when they started.

Mind you its not unusual, a lot of live bands just cannot cut it and dont have the discipline to play accurately in the studio. Ronnie Lane, The Faces bass player didn't play bass on their first album, not considered good enough, the bass was played by my mate Dave S.

Get Dave S Down the Half Moon! That bassist from Strictly who turns up is fugging amazing, but I don't want to be accused of mentioning obscure names just for the heck of it.

Wouldn't have minded playing on Agnetha a few years ago...

Flea. I'm not a chili peppers fan but every bass player I know rates him (not a large or impressive sample, but all of them).

Donald duck dunn on loads of my fave soul tracks

Flea absolutely shits on most of the names on this thread. Say what you will about the chili pepper's most recent album (it was turd) their musicianship, particularly with John Frusciante is possibly unparalleled in contemporary mainstream music.

What makes a good bass player..?
Jaco Pastorius and many others mentioned here would not call themselves 'Bass players'.
They are composers using the bass.
Some of the most memorable  bass lines are very simple, but they are perfect...

  • I think Mohini Dey could give him a run for his money.
  • Are there many bass guitarists on here? I recently bought a Mex Jaguar, the dream would have been a Rickenbacker 4000 series, but for the time being I couldn't justify the outlay.

@Braziliance how are you getting on?

@PaddyP17 did you build your home studio?

Put it this way, I won't be joining Metallica anytime soon  :D

When I first started playing the guitar, I had a poorly set up instrument that made my hands so sore.

Don't give up, I can give you some pointers that will make things easier. There are a couple of practice techniques that I would suggest to anyone learning either bass or guitar. You don't even need to be plugged in and you can do it while watching TV, but you will need to practice.

Yeah go for it mate, all ears :)
  • Never got my studio in the end @PopIcon - more just one of those things you have to say on telly. I'd been made redundant literally the week before that episode, so the cash came in handy. And I'm a keys player not a bassist! Wish I could slap some bass though. Great instrument.

First one is spider walking. Fret one (pointer finger), fret two (middle finger), fret three (ring finger) fret four (pinkie) and you do that across each string D, G, B, e and then reverse, so e, B, G, D, working the pinkie on the 4th fret, ring on the 3rd, middle the 2d and pointer on the 1st. Work up as much as the fretboard as you can.
This exercise will help with both muscle memory and finger dexterity.

This video will give you an idea of what I mean.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0vE6WJQzDQ

The second exercise is hammering. Pick any fret and string you like, eg hammer between your pointer (on fret 3 D string) and your middle finger (fret 4 D string) Go for as long as you can without plucking the strin. When you have had enough of the middle finger, keep your pointer on the same one and use your ring finger on the next fret (fret 5 D string) and them move on to the pinkie (fret 6 D string), but again keep your pointer in the same place. Alternate this between all fingers across all strings and frets.

These are really boring exercises, however do them for 30 mins each day and you will soon notice the difference.
it's going to hurt at the beginning, but it gets easier I promise.

Some people go straight into scales and that ends up being all they can play.

Feel free to send me a message and I'll send you a video, as I'm not sure how clear I've been in my explanations.
  • Yeah I've seen this learning technique before, I'll certainly give the video a watch and try.

I can't pop you a message mate as your profile is private, having difficulty picturing your paragraph about hammering

  • I see Andy Rourke mentioned earlier. Criminally underrated - This Charming Man, The Heamaster's Ritual and Barbarism Begins At Home are all absolute monsters.

    'Worth 10%' my arse
  • I can't do links but
David Hines with Alan Holdsworth guesting on guitar. Youtube.
    Superb.
  • Stranglers Jean Jacques Brunel. If nothing else then just for the tight leather trousers. Would ya? Oh if I must.
