Dangerous game. I downloaded it on a whim a couple of years back as something to pass the commute.
Before I knew it I was constantly jotting down ideas at work about how I could structure the team, who should be in my starting 11, what I really needed on the bench and how I could rotate players for fitness/injury/morale/discipline reasons.
I'd be up in to the early hours playing every night without fail. Even watching the simulations.
The ridiculous thing was I didn't even do that much in the transfer market, I actually enjoyed working with the players I had when I started. I'd only end up dipping in to the market when it was absolutely required.
You end up feeling a weird sense of loyalty to your team.
I can remember some of the personalities seemed good, Jacko was a good captain but Solly would switch off during team talks. Church was peculiarly decent if brought on as a late sub, and I can remember Harriott being a beast playing in the hole.
It certainly got me thinking about tactics and the characteristics required in a team.
Mika Aaritalo was a beast on FM08. Signed for 200k in the first window... After a season he's worth 10m, two seasons 30m and it just got more and more insane.
I think I ended up selling him to AC Milan for close to 60m and used the cash to build a team to challenge for trophies.

You could build a monster of a team on that one - Aaritalo left wing, Torje right wing, Nacer Barazite behind Billy Sharp up top....
Oh and Breno in defence - think he ended up in prison in real life!
I remember when I picked up the very first version of it on my old Commodore Amiga back in the early 90s, think it was 92, either just before or after sitting my GCSE exams when it was in its first guise as Championship Manager.
The number of hours I played it for was ridiculous. Thinking back, I spent more time playing it than studying for my A-Levels. I used to bunk back home early and play it between periods of sixth form, especially once I'd passed my driving test and used to drive back and forth. 3 years of University was pretty much the same.
Once I'd started working, the hours decreased but I still paid most evenings when I wasn't out. It was only when I first met my first wife that it was put down.
I didn't pick it up again until the tablet version came out a couple of years ago. I ended up playing it on the commute for a good few months before putting it down again when I realised I was going to bed and then still playing it at 3am. Havent picked it up since.
Brilliant game though. As LuckyReds said further up, the sense of loyalty you feel towards your players gets to ridiculous levels. Scott Parker was immense playing for me at Spurs, along with Bale, Modric and Van der Vaart. God bless them all.
So tempting to pick it up again but realise it may cause serious harm to my second marriage. My personality is far too addictive for it.
FM 2017 to include a range of scenarios around Brexit vote. Too far, or true to realism?
Think its quite good... Real life Managers are forced to deal with ever changing factions from politics and Brexit could definitely be one of those, especially if its No.3 from the list in the link... Would be good though if you can amend the settings so prior to the game starting you know whats going to happen in 10-years.
i.e. Random example... Build up your squad with Brazilians to be one of the super-powers as Charlton Manager yet then be forced to sell nearly all of them because they fail Work Permit rules and so be forced to rebuild your squad
Seriously addictive game. I had to attend a help group just to get over it "My names is FORD and I'm a FM addict". It got to the point where I was giving post match interviews whilst walking the dog!
Finally quit last summer, when I dramatically announced my retirement from football management. Haven't looked back, but miss the team.
Stopped playing in 2004 as I was worried I might develop a Vitamin D deficiency. Planning a return when new game comes out this year, guessing it's changed a bit since I last played!

The beta is expected to be out later today, proper release 4 November.
Start the season and before you know it it's November in the season "I'll just play till the New year".
1st January "transfer window, let me put some bids in, while i'm in FM mode" proceed to play the whole of January. Also free transfers can be negotiated to join 1st July, got to get those contracts sorted.
Comes to mid February, enjoying your new revitalized squad for the promotion push/relegation dog fight "I may aswell see the season out".
End of the season, press 'continue' a hundred times to see the awards you coyld win, start looking for freebies, transfer window opens, get bidding. Before you know it, it's the start of the season...."may aswell play the first 5 games"
Some real memories in the players he mentions, I always used to sign Mike Duff, Taribo West, Mark Kerr, Ryan Williams and Cherno Samba for us!
Hence my post in the desktop computer thread about a laptop I could play it on.
Looking forward to reading this.
I remember my team from that game so well... Mark Kerr was a monster. David Collins... 20 finishing and available for <£100k. To Madeira up front was banned from net game. 3-1-2-1-2
Chiotis Okoronkwo N'Diaye West Said Kerr Ilola Moukoko Collins Samba

Surely Andrew Mainwaring should be in there somewhere, nonleague to full international within 2 seasons always got a goal a game. Legend

Sutton and Shearer up front would get a goal a game each.
Haven't played the newest footy manager, any of our youth players wonderkid material?

But then if you want Charlton to win trophies there's no better way.
Try and keep it slightly removed from work stuff.
Because of the addiction.
