    Too little too late sadly.

Hopefully Harriott will leave at the end of the season with a bit of respect amongst the fans. He deserves it.

If Duchatelet really wanted to increase attendances, season ticket sales and get many fans off his back but still retain ownership he could try sacking Katrien, appointing Powell as Manager (or head coach with curbs as director of football) and Dyer as deputy manager.

Alex Dyer came in and sat amongst the Charlton fans upstairs today. Had a quick chat. Asked him if he was here scouting which made him laugh. He said he was there as a fan and you could tell that as he followed the game with each kick.

I asked him if he was ready to bring the dream team back to League 1... Didn't get an answer then as I'm sure he looked at me thinking shut up you nuisance I'm trying to watch this game!

    Nice man.

By all accounts real top bloke, but as someone who didn't think that highly of Powell at this level, I have to ask, how good is he as a coach given only Powell has given him jobs (West Ham youth aside). I asked a knowledgeable West Ham supporter what they thought of him when he came to us, and said he hadn't really stood out there.

We live to fight another day.
Knowing that we always need at least 2 goals to win a game,
Will leave as short of safety at the end of the season, but we showed plenty of spirit and had the luck that had deserted us for most of the season.
Pleased for Fox,Pope and Harriott who all had very good games today,
after being the whipping boys when ever they normally play.
Calum who was blasting the ball over the bar or wide in practice,
Proved that when his brain is in gear, he can show composure.
why Poyet can't replicate the form he had the first time around is a mystery,
but could well start against MK Dons where we need him to impose himself on the game.
After the 19 second goal, with a good cross from Fox.
we gave away the mandatory goal from a corner after Pope saved the one on one.
We rely too much on the opposition, missing chances, but at least we do create a fair few our selves now.
We had legs in midfield today in Cousins, even if his close control remains
a work in progress; a winning captain and a 90 minute decent shift.
Young-suk, had a poor game, and Motta seem better at going forward than defending, Fanni was caught out at times but was better than last week.
Yaya has a good rapport with the fans who like his unusual style, but has ability.

Only 3 points and 1 place up the League, But
We live to fight another day.

MK Dons is our Last chance Saloon match.
We need a Tuesday night win under the Lights.
Or else we will be lost in darkness.

  • I have always found fault in Callum's decision making and lack of composure.
Its interesting that Riga mentioned that he "rushes his decisions" and that they are obviously working on that.
His goals today showed real composure, so maybe he has made a qualitative leap forward.
Riga obviously seems to bring the best out of him.
You could never fault his commitment and he has never bad-mouthed the club or bemoaned the flak he has often got from the fans.
He could be a real asset in a League 1 campaign.
How ironic it would be if he walked away now on free, sticking 2 fingers up to the likes of me.

He got a lot of chants today. Not as many as Sonogo but second most praised player.
  • All that loud chanting today from before kick off right through until after the match had finished - didn't anybody receive the memo stating the club is doomed to relegation ? Must have been that problem with the post we keep being told about...

It wasn't until I joined CL that I realized just quite how scapegoated he's been in the past. I've always been a bit iffy on him, but most of what I've seen from him is him playing up front as an out-and-out striker, which doesn't suit him.

He's definitely a player who has looked better under Riga, as, by all accounts, has Cousins. It's really simplistic, but one thing I find often gets overlooked in coaches is whether or not they make individual players better in addition to finding a system and getting results. For me, Riga has done that with Mak, Cousins, and Harriott. I think many will only rate him if he keeps us up, but given he did this last time with Callum and Marvin Sordell (FFS--something no one else has been able to do since he was at Watford), I think it's an indication that he's a good coach.

I agree, Riga seems to understand both a players natural position and how to get the best out of them in it.

He isn't afraid of using players outside of their preference but seems to coach the players into what's needed differently there.

He has the benefit of being able to say sensible things as well.

He may not be the best ever but he's good.

    Up top

I was a bit surprised about the Sanogo chant - although he got a hatrick last week - I found him incredibly frustrating today. I've even hurt my throat yelling at him to get onside; something which frustrated me several times during the second half. I actually felt we lost some decent attacking opportunities due to his positioning being very poor when he waiting for the counter attack. To say I was dismayed when Riga took off Harriott.. and then JBG... would be an understatement.

When Makienok came on I thought he offered something different, something a little more intimidating and dangerous really. His shot was absolutely brilliant, such a shame it wasn't an inch or two lower.

    Midfield

Harriott gave a very impressive performance, much like his first game back from his loan spell against Forest. The confidence for his second goal was immense and it was a very well taken opportunity. I'm not surprised though as he's looked a lot sharper of late and I think he's ready to turn a page and properly kick on in his career.

Yun started quite brightly in the first half - but by the end I think he needed a bit of a break as things weren't going his way. A few tumbles, an air kick and he generally seemed a bit lightweight. That said, and I'm not sure why... but I liked the look of him anyway. (I was, however, Kerkar's biggest fan...)

Alou Diarra, during his brief spell, looked good - and I hope his recovery hasn't been set back too badly. Although, Diego Poyet? Another performance where I can't say I noticed him at all... Not sure if he manages to blend in with the pitch, but I've yet to notice him in a Charlton shirt since he's come back. Does he spend much time on the ball?

The biggest quality he had back in 2014 was his confidence and the way he could keep the ball until he'd spotted a decent pass, unfortunately his chameleon impression seems to be his most noteworthy skill at the moment.

    Back four

Defensively I thought Motta looked a very worthy RB, his positioning however is definitely something he needs to be picked up on. He knew how to get forward though and had some decent pace on him - given the formation I think he did a good job and is exactly the type of player we need. Fanni also looked good, and Tex looked his usual assured self. A special mention for Morgan Fox though - I've been a huge critic but today he looked pretty solid, perhaps due to the defence being more skillful than recent times!

    Day out

The support was decent - even if it is disappointing to be able to buy a ticket on the door 20 mins before kick-off for a local match - and I thought there was less aggro than Fulham; although I was sat in the top tier.

The leg room at Griffin Park is absolutely dreadful though, making it impossible to sit straight - I'm not sure how it would've worked out if there wasn't a huge big empty area in the middle I could move in to? Charging £35 to have your circulation cut off at knee level seems a bit steep.

I thought the Stewards were good, although I thought the ones at Fulham were pretty friendly too - and it's refreshing to see a club allow smokers an area to smoke. Regardless of your views on that, if there's an open air area then why not? Was disappointing not to be able to grab a pint before the match and at half time though. The local pubs must love that pre-match..

Laughed at the banter at the train station with the two young lads on the opposite platform, although a bit cringe to light a smoke bomb on a train platform... two trains an hour on a Saturday though?!

Oh, and Pope? I was worried when I saw he was our number 1 today; like young Morgan though, he gave a solid display.

Very vocal and seemed to be confident enough to tell the defence what they should be doing and where they should be doing it. He should be proud of his performance today. Perhaps he could've claimed the ball before they scored - but let's not forget, our defending from corners has been abysmal this season. (Although, Brentford had a number of corners today and only managed that one.)
  • Had MKD and Rotherham lost today and we win on Tues, we'd only be one Point away from safety with ten games remaining and a much stronger squad than we've had for most of the season. That's an indication of how quickly things can turn in football. Yet so many supporters had thrown in the towel with 14/15 games remaining!
Crazy also that a player like Harriott hasn't been anywhere near the first team for the majority of the season. I shan't be getting excited unless we beat MKD. But I said a couple of weeks ago that if we can go into the last ten games 4 points or less from safety, then we have a good chance. That remains a possibility.

Sanogo, whenn he sauntered around refusing to get back inside and then complained when he was passed to, that was very lazy work.

Still looks like a threat and when going forwards he chased down and won some balls he had no right to.

Riga needs to get him to get back inside though, sloppy

My defining memory of seeing Sanogo at Arsenal was that he looked awkward. There's all the talk about the poor touches and missed chances, but he also looked really awkward to defend against. We might be lucky if he gets another three goals in the run in, but as long as he remains a handful, he could create space for Callum and JBG (who can hopefully find better form with more quality in front of him), and be a good foil for Mak and maybe Lookman.

My main concern is we still cant defend from corners!!!! What the hell do we do on the training ground?? It sounded as though Harriott played very well, as did Pope with some great saves. A win is very welcome and 3 points were needed.

Tuesday's game is now one of the most important games for CAFC in a long long time, if we win we can close the gap (Rotherham are home to Boro, City away to Wolves and Bolton home to Ipswich) to within 1 point of Rotherham and 4 of MK Dons if results go our way!!
If ever we needed to give 100% support to the team then Tuesday is the night, and the team need to give 100% to the game. Can the great escape happen? who knows, but Tuesday will give us an indication. So roll on Tuesday, lets get behind them and then move forward from there. Match thread from 6.45.....COYR's

BBC just posted last year's Prem table, showing Leicester with 9 games left......... Bottom - 3 points adrift, 7 points from safety and considerably worse GD than Hull, who eventually made up the 3rd relegated side.

So we're going to stay up and win the league next year? This day just got even better!

Same number of points from safety and one less game to go. Obviously we are in a better position that if we'd lost or drawn, but re catching the franchise the position is worse than before the game.

My Bees mate was sat in front of the Motta incident. Not a red in his opinion...a yellow for a nudge to which Bidwell acted up.

Sorry, AddicksAddict, had a few too many celebratory wines when I posted last night! But 'if' we beat them on Tuesday? My heart will burst! It is the hope that keeps us going but also kills us!

That sounds about right. None of the Brentford players reacted as though he'd done anything bad and it was right in front of the 4th official who the ref checked with before booking him

This is probably his level, just! Lot of hype surrounding him at present because of the hat trick and quite simply because he offers a different, if not awkward, option. Totally agree with previous comments about his indiscipline allowing him to constantly stray off-side. Many an attacking option was lost due to this, especially second half. However, he worries defenders and that's half the battle.

Perfect opportunity for the introduction of Lookman's pace (for Sanogo) toward the end of the match. As they pushed on they were leaving a lot of space at the back which Lookman possibly could have exploited better than Sanogo.

If, but it did not happen.

Steve Brown was very critical of both Motta and Fanni. Said both were guilty of going to ground in their own box, thus looking likely to either give away a pen, or taking themselves out of the action.

But the general impression of those two on here is more positive.

The impression I had was that Brentford had plenty of chances, and Nick Pope kept us in it. Doesn't sound like a defensive improvement to me. On the other hand, we did not cave in after Diarra went off, which was a positive surprise.

More thoughts from those who were there?

With Charlton, I have extreme optimism and pessimism in equal proportions. If Charlton are 3-0 up with 10 mins to go, I want to see a 4th just in case the opposition get one back, and then a second. Equally, if the opposition are 3-0, I still have belief that the unlikely can happen, Charlton have a storming finish and win the game 4-3.

In this instance, despite evidence of this whole shitty season, the rubbish Duchatelet strategy, Karel Fraeye, Roger Johnson and the prospect of more of the same next season, I still have hope and belief against the odds that things can improve. Charlton can put a run together, escape relegation by the skin of the teeth and Roland Duchatelet then decides its a good time to sell up to a decent owner, who will make sensible and intelligent football decisions again. Charlton then get into shape for a challenge to the premiership.

All this from a promising performance helped by Button dropping a simple cross in front of Harriott who finishes well.

Because at the start of yesterday the requirement to stave of relegation was to make up an eight point difference over twelve games. Now the requirement is to make up the same eight points but over eleven games.
