New Article: The Champions of League 1, 2011/12 - where are they now?

As we are about to be relegated from The Championship again (and it could be sealed today) - I have been thinking about life in League 1. It took us 3 seasons to get out of the third tier of English Football last time around and if we don't get new owners, it could potentially take longer this time around, Our League 1 winning season was the best season we've had as a club since dropping out of the Premier League in the 06/07 season (9 years ago). It's interesting where players have ended up. Some of the players that are abbout to be listed were described by RD as being not good enough for Charlton or The Championship. There are players that were not good enough to play for Charlton in the Championship, however they have the utmost respect from the fans as they always put in maximum effort (unlike too many of the current crop) and the fans genuinely felt as if they could relate to the players - something that can't be said of the current crop.

Players from 11/12 season (Player - Total Apps in season - Goals - Where they are now):
Ben Hamer - 42 - 0 - Leicester's bench.
Andy Hughes - 20 - 0 - Coach for Crystal Palace.
Cedric Evina - 9 - 0 - Doncaster Rovers
Johnnie Jackson - 39 - 13 - Charlton Athletic Captain
Michael Morrison - 50 - 5 - Birmingham City Captain
Matt Taylor - 43 - 1 - Player-coach for Bath City
Danny Green - 37 - 3 - Luton Town

Brad Wright-Phillips - 45 - 22 - New York Red Bulls
Scotty Wagstaff - 30 - 5 - Bristol City

  • They haven't done as well for themselves as I expected. Danny Haynes at Boreham wood? Danny Green at Luton? Not that good, is it?
  • You're right - that's why it's interesting to see. The majority of players have had good stints at league 1 or above since leaving and a lot of the players have racked up a lot of games for their current clubs.

The interesting one is John Sullivan. He is only 28 and has packed up football altogether.
