The 3-1 win with the Melrose 9 seconds goal.....I remember a lad standing very close just in front of us who got coined just above his eye when that goal, or maybe it was the second one, went in....west ham were behind the fence to the right, just yards away...scary when you're a teenager in the 'hooligan 80s' thinking any minute they're gonna do ya....
The Leicester game in 1992 end of the season, we had a chance of making the play- offs, won 2-0 but finished 7th!
Also, I went to the first game of the season under the dowie era, we lost 3-1 and I remember seeing this new 'midfield dynamo' playing that was Amdy Faye and just watching the game pass him by....I was in the west ham end for some reason though, can't remember why
It wasn't until about ten minutes ago I remebered I was mascot when we played Brighton at "home". Won 2-0, with goals from Nelson and Walsh I think.
They were wearing a full Tesco bag kit that day.
Kicked off on the tube back from Upton Park @Terry Naylor
They were indeed. Remember calling them the Tesco bag team. Back in those days we could take the whole family on the tour prior to the game, my nan came along and walked into the charlton dressing room and got an eye full of Carl Leaburn in his full glory. Not too sure who was more red that day, Carlo or my nan
My first time watching a professional game was West Ham against Man City in the FA Cup 3rd round in 2009. Decent little ground.
Oh, and that time they tried to destroy any goodwill they have by smashing up the opposing team's coach while their own seemed to claim the coach was asking for it.
Really looking forward to having them in the taxpayer funded Olympic Stadium! Can't wait to see what damage they'll do!
I was at the 3-1 Melrose game, and the 2-0 win over Leicester, which as others have said was just utterly surreal, the Leicester fans just kept pouring into Upton Park.
What made it funnier of course is that a Rob Lee and David Whyte inspired CAFC, well and truly carved them open before half time, which meant that it was one of the strangest atmosphere's I have encountered at a footie game.
However my abiding memory of Upton Park is of a 'home' game against Ipswich, when I went down for a burger at around the 35 minute mark, and promptly missed both goals in a 1-1 draw! The funny thing being that the crowds were so low in those days, that I didn't believe my mates when they told me I had missed both goals.
Almost unbelievably the same thing happened again years laster, when we beat Liverpool 2-0 at the Valley in a night game, though by that time we had progressed to TV's on the concourse!
Not read whole thread so apologies if posted previously.
I am sure I have not dreamed this up. Anyone remember this?
We were away to West Ham and at half time they were filming for some tv show, and West Ham youth team and our youth team were acting out a scenario where West Ham broke away and scored a goal but our players kept on defending the cross or the goalie would save the ball and they took about 10!attempts to film the scene.
You're not imagining it. It was for the channel 4 show diary of a teenage health freak.
Nothing but good memories from the place even in defeat
Because of where I live it was just so much better than Selhurst
Melrose 9 seconds was my first trip and I can tell you it was a scary place for an 8 year old at the time
Remember lots about our time there good and bad, first game, Leicester game, Robinsons first game, Bury in the league cup in front of not many, beating them 1-0 as the away team in 92, the Graham Stuart 1-0 win, being as drunk as I've ever been watching us lose 3-1 to Australia, koncheskys penalty miss...
Sad we didn't get a chance to go there again since we were relegated from the prem
The way sky have acted this week has annoyed me so much. It was ridiculous to go on about Upton park so much and interview everyone possible. It wasn't until about ten minutes ago I remebered I was mascot when we played Brighton at "home". Won 2-0, with goals from Nelson and Walsh I think.

I think this was the second season there and West Ham had been relegated to the second division and we were the away team and they gave us all of the South end of the ground.
I can't remember the TV show but the plot line was that the leading boy who's only 15 or thereabouts is on the bench. Loads of the first team keep getting injured and so the manager is forced to give him his debut for West Ham and he scores in the last second. Of course, for so many players to get injured they had to have the charlton team hacking the West Ham team, elbowing and so on for them to get 'injured'.
We were late getting there from the pub and met a mate on the terrace who said there was a really bad tempered youth match on earlier they were kicking shit out of each other - he must have had a lot to drink not to notice the fully directed game of football.
First game - West Ham vs Oxford - '86 - taken by @GlassHalfFull Last game - Hull u21s a few weeks ago - took @GlassHalfFull
Lots of stuff in between - winning away to West Ham at the start of the Upton Park years, Hendry, Leicester, Newcastle, North Bank's final game, John Barnes running himself into the ground, Rooney's England debut
Sadly my abiding memory will be that cringefest of a farewell party last night. I just couldn't tear myself away against my better judgement. Kept watching just to see if it could get any worse and it did!
Jumping up when Leaburn scored against Newcastle in our first (I think) game over there, coming down on the corner of the terrace and ripping my ankle ligaments. This was that same weekend that my front tooth crown fell out and I also got stung on the lip by a wasp at Brands Hatch on the Saturday. It had flown into a can I was drinking and I nearly swallowed it when I took a swig. Managed to spit it out but it stung me on the way.
Also, 8 of us (including Tavern) being surrounded by Pompey outside Manhattans after a game. PC Rogers managed to get a van across the door while we made our exit in the back of a mates escort van.
Best game was the Leicester 2 0 game, closely followed by the 1 0 win against Millwall.
I think it was mark fords escort van a few of us ended up in Covent Garden with some Chelsea lads if I remember , proper outnumbered by Pompey good laugh though ,hairy moment could have come right on top .
PC Rogers died a few years back
I know mate proper nice bloke also remember Bristol rovers away when the trouble started he looked at a few of us and turned a blind eye over the segregation fence we went , not that I would do it today , Mick Rogers top man .
The 2000 Boxing Day thrashing. Whole family were there. Tried to put it behind us but we were right behind goal and featured heavily in the TV coverage.
Best match at Upton Park against WHU for me took place on the 5th April 1958.
Charlton bidding to return straightaway to the 1st Division and up against the Hammers who were then top, and went on to be promoted
From memory this was a backs to the wall event - rain drenched pitch and down to 10 for final 20 minutes after the dismissal of the now legendary Buck Ryan.
What a line up - Duff, Firmani P, Townsend, Hewie, Ufton, Kiernan, White, Leary , Summers and Eddie Werge
West Ham included Bond and Cantwell. Bobby Moore made his debut the first home again of the following season.
Went to Westham in 04 Jan 1964 West Ham United v Charlton Athletic W 3-0 FA Cup , with two or three mates from the flats @ Charlton, one of my mates planned the route, which involved going via Woowich and the Ferry. Must have been my first away game without my father, I was almost 12, and remember a pretty hostile atmosphere. Just remember we never were really in the game. Remember Budgie Byrne, and the fans shouting out you can stuff your 'Vitalis up your arse' every time Bobby Moore got the ball, which of course we all thought was highly amusing. I think we got chased down the street afterwards. Did not return for years, although used to look forward to them playing at the Valley, as so many of my mates supported Westham, as you would do living at the top of Victoria Way. Went to see the hammers play against Fulham, and the ground was not full, a couple of years ago.
One of my best mates ( westham) text me last night and was full of it, crowned off a bloody nightmare of a season to be honest.
My memories are mainly good ones even in defeat as I was just so glad to not be at Shitehurst anymore. I especially loved the midweek games as I'd leave work, jump on the tube and get stuck into the pints in the Boleyn Pub reading a latest James Herbert or Stephen King while I waited for Dad & Bruv to arrive. Going back working the West Ham v Millwall games were weird. The place had been done up with those cheesy towers out the front and the area around it had completely changed. It felt like it had lost its identity then. I'm not surprised they jumped at the chance to move.
A live televised 0-0 game against Birmingham (I didn't know how they could possibly make it seem interesting)
............
Randomly I remember taking Jamie Stuart on the tube up with me that day. Linvoy Primus got MoM
I was playing a cup game near Wormwood Scrubs that day and got into the bar just as they announced that Primus got MOM, why that stuck in my mind I'll never know. Think that was the only home game I missed that season.
Primus is in the studio with Scott Minto at the Pompey/Plymouth game.

First game of the season against Newcastle.
Colin Walsh signed my programme.
