2 cup semi finals as well didnt they. Everton are the Spurs of the north. deluded fans, a club who hasn't been relevant since they won the league in the 80's.
Got to both domestic cup semi-finals as well. It's a harsh one but the Everton fans have turned on him and it seems like the players have as well. There's reports that Barkley is refusing to sign a new deal as long as Martinez carries on as manager and Baines was hardly supportive in his statements recently.
Ultimately the players have the say. If they won't play for him he has to go. Rumours of Frank de Boer hardly set the pulse racing though
Don't think this can be classed as a knee-jerk sacking or one pushed by fans who think they deserve to be higher than where they are. Everton's long-term form has been toilet for the resources and players they currently have and they could be finishing as low as 16th by the end of the season. Everton's fans are far more patient than the glory-hunting bin-dippers across the park and generally recognise the importance of managerial stability. Martinez could have easily faced calls for the sack 12 months ago by fans but they are somewhat slower to such measures than other fans. Even Moyes nearly got them relegated but managed to avoid outright fan protests.
Sounds like he lost the squad though and probably a sensible sacking all things considered.
So, that's it. KM heard on the grapevine that Martinez was going to become available. She added a nasty clause in CW's contract and, hey presto, we have Martinez!!

Should they just give up?
They've got a decent spine in that team - Stones, Baines, Barkley, Barry, Lukaku - with a smattering of quality elsewhere, they should at least be on the cusp of Europe. Depending on who they get, it shouldn't be too big a job dialling them up a bit.

First season under Martinez they finished 5th, last year 11th, this year the highest they can finish is 11th, lowest is 16th, and that's with more financial backing (relatively speaking) than any Everton manager since the 80s. Definitely going backwards and recent form is relegation-like with Martinez seemingly clueless on how to fix it.

It is a squad full of overhyped English players so everyone expects them to finish higher than they should. Are Baines, Cleverley, McCarthy and Barry really higher quality than mid table? Yes they have a few players who are Europa league standard such as Barkley and Mirallas but they really have a mid table squad. The only real class player is Lukaku.
They've scored a healthy, if not spectacular number of goals, it's their defence that's the problem. Only the bottom 5 have conceded more and it's this that's the reason they are 12th instead of 5th-8th. If anybody believed Martinez could fix that defence then I don't think he'd be out of a job, but everybody knows he just can't do it. They may play good football at times, but they can't defend, they switch off at critical times, it's the same pattern as Wigan, and Everton had to either give him so much cash he could build a team that would score so many goals that the defence wouldn't matter, or get in a manager who could organise a back 4.

Their defence has been hit hard by injuries with their best defence of Baines (missed 23 games), Coleman (11), Jagielka (18) and Stones (8) actually only starting two games together as a unit. The loss of form of Howard also didn't help.
Saw a joke yesterday that Everton lost to Sunderland on purpose because they wanted Newcastle to go down so that they could have Benitez as their new manager.
I believe a better manager than Martinez could do more with those players.
Maybe would have finished a few places higher this season but they really aren't anything special.
Another manager could well have finished a lot lower with that bunch of players too.
It works both ways.
But isn't that the entire point? A better manager could finish higher, and a worse manager could finish lower. Which is why Everton will now be looking for a better manager.
Every team in the world could finish lower than they do, but if the potential is there to finish higher than that's what you have to bring out.
Comments
everton have finished 12th in prem ( they have had a bad season ) they are getting well above there station.
arsenal 3rd and qualified for champs league ( done this or there abouts for past few years with a domestic cup win).
for me it devalues fans protests people will just think of things arent going there way again.

With the players they have, 12th for them is absolutely terrible and they've gone backwards under Martinez

So ? This is a world where Leicester finished above everyone
