The old warhorses are bringing out their new album 'Whoosh' soon, would have been out a couple of months ago but put back due to Covid, as well as postponing their ongoing final farewell tour.
Saw them three years ago and hoping to catch them again if the tour happens though I wouldn't be surprised if bands of this generation don't tour again because of Covid. It is their main earner though, far more than record sales. Wonder when we'll have live gigs again at all.
New album 'Turning to Crime' coming out soon and it's a covers album. Some interesting track choices!
Deep Purple, ‘Turning to Crime' Track Listing
1. “7 and 7 Is” (Love) 2. “Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu” (Huey "Piano" Smith) 3. “Oh Well” (Fleetwood Mac) 4. “Jenny Take A Ride!” (Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels) 5. “Watching the River Flow” (Bob Dylan) 6. “Let the Good Times Roll” (Ray Charles & Quincy Jones) 7. “Dixie Chicken” (Little Feat) 8. “Shapes of Things” (Yardbirds) 9. “The Battle of New Orleans” (Lonnie Donegan/Johnny Horton) 10. “Lucifer” (Bob Seger System) 11. “White Room” (Cream) 12. “Caught in the Act” (Medley: "Going Down" /"Green Onions" / "Hot ‘Lanta" /"Dazed and Confused" / "Gimme Some Lovin’" )
Sadly, I don't like it. Peter Green is god, not Eric.
I suspect that all the cover versions are inferior to the originals .. DP were a superb band in their pomp .. pity they are resorting to what is pretty much Karaoke
Just bought tickets to the 02 show next year after getting into Blue Oyster Cult who are supporting. Don’t know much about DP but checked out highway star which is good.
Any reccomendations on what DP tracks to listen to next?

IMO covers need to be subtly or even sometimes radically different from the original artist. I can't see the point of a cover being almost identical to the original.
Anyway, David Bowie made a good fist of it with his own covers album, Pin Ups. You could hardly call it karaoke.
Mk 1 Purple: Sounds dated now but still a good listen - Lalena, Mandrake Root, Wring That Neck
Purists probably go for Mk 2 Purple: Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Woman From Tokyo, Black Night
I grew up with Mk 3 Purple: Burn, Stormbringer, Lay Down Stay Down, Mistreated (More bluesy)
Fans are divided about Mk 4 Purple: New American guitarist Tommy Bolin and a change of style a bit more funky : This Time Around, Comin' Home, Getting' Tighter (I love it!!!)
There was then a hiatus of approx 8 years before Deep Purple reappeared with the Mk 2 lineup and sound that has continued for roughly 35 years despite some major personnel changes in that time.

Live at Montreux 2011 is a great album, with a full orchestra. Steve Morse superb and When a Blind Man Cries is immense. One of my favourite DP tracks although Blackmore hated it! As said above, Machine Head one of the greatest albums ever.
I saw them at the O2 in 2017 again with a full orchestra - Gillan was just about on the very edge of his powers and I saw them again at the Manchester Apollo a couple of years later and he was over the edge!
In their day and on top form they were on of the greatest live bands.

Surely one of the only bands to have now released studio albums in seven different decades. Can only think of Yes as another. Any more, music trivia fans?

Can't think of any bands - The Stones beat them for elapsed time 1962-2016 (54 years but only (only!!) 6 decades. DP 1968-2021 (53 years)

If you're going to see them live next year it might be worth checking out some of the recent albums with Steve Morse (Now What, Infinite and Whoosh as well as the new covers album Turning to Crime). They'll probably play some recent stuff and it's got quite a different sound to the classic Ritchie Blackmore led material: more relaxed and upbeat in a way. There was a lot more tension when RB was in the band, which definitely contributed to the manic energy of the classic years.
You'll see a totally different vibe with the current lineup, which has 3/5 of the In Rock/Machine Head/Made in Japan band but in many ways is a different group altogether.

My favourite album is Made in Japan and listen to Lazy.

Just been listening to lot of Deep Purple and had forgotten how many great tracks and albums they produced. Unfortunately never got to see them in their pomp in the 70's but saw them about 5 years ago and they were still very good. Be interested to see a set list for the current tour.

Quo ?
Edit - 60/70/80/90/00/10 but not yet 20 so maybe 6 for Quo as "Backbone" 2019.
Status Quo are a good shout for releasing albums in seven different decades but just had a look and last one came out in 2019. Maybe they'll bring out another one though to join this obscure trivia answer quiz club

I think the millions of greatest hits released almost make up for it. I have just got my Machine Head CD out that has the original and the remix versions and will blast them out today now! This never gets old.
First ever concert for Deep Purple was a massive 54 years ago today! Still going, albeit with only one member from that original lineup. Quiz question, no Googling - who is it?
