If we know they want £500k then offering £150k is just the kind of bid that's going to piss them off. I get offering less than the asking price, but so much below it is just asking for the selling team to sell to anyone other than you.
Everyone remembers the Suarez Arsenal saga. Liverpool have since admitted that if Arsenal had taken them to court they would have won, but they were so incensed by Arsenal's mick-taking offer that they were willing to risk it. We're not going to be the only ones in for Moncur so starting off with an annoyingly low bid is hardly going to endear us
but we probably don't want to sign him. It will be the same as when we appoint Nobby Vinegar and sign Johann van der Shite 'we wanted British but blah, blah, blah'
500k doesn't seem that steep to me. 150k sounds low these days.
Definitely a question to be asked about who is identifying these players, but Moncur is the kind of players we should be looking at and we definitely need some better attack minded players in midfield (have done for a long time now).
There's potentially a little bit of deal to be done too with Colchester being relegated and I can see him being in demand so there maybe isn't time to wait until a new manager comes in. Personally I'm fine with pushing ahead with this one as I would think most managers would be interested in him.
Hopefully they have learnt some lessons with the CW saga though and don't try to drag it out too long and allow someone else to steal a march on us.
Good news. We've supposedly made a bid for an English player who did well in the league we're going to playing in next season.
First bid turned down isn't a surprise, sure that happens all the time.
Agent or Colchester leak the news to start a bidding scuffle (can't really call it a war at this level), sure that happens all the time too.
Test now is will we go back in with an higher offer. Goal scoring attacking young midfielder who is young and lives locally. Perfect if we can agree a fee and wages.
All the issues about no coach/manager/Dir of Football are valid but I was told Wilder had given KM a list of players he wanted so either we're going on that or Simon Clark is, as the only remaining part of the coaching team, calling the shots.
The initial bid may have been made to flush out a price. At least everyone knows he is for sale and it is now a matter of price and determination to make the signing.
We really need a manager in place urgently.
Only reason I can think of for a delay is that we are waiting for Phil Parkinson
Would be pretty keen on Clark getting the role. He's very open on Twitter about what he likes to see from a team and how to go about games from a tactical point of view, would be interesting.

Agree. Well worth a follow @yogs67 and while not experienced as a manager at least he knows the club, the U21s and the first team.
Players I talked to spoke well of him too so might help keep a few and make for a smoother transition.
My uncle and cousin are CUFC season ticket holders and really rate this lad highly. IMO this is the sort of signing we should be making in this league.
I don't care if the manager isn't in place - I'd like to get one of the best players at this level signed up and then tell the manager - "That's what you've got to work with"
How many managers turn up to a club and instantly have everything their own way - there are always players they know all about and players they don't know about - this is no different.
Come and join our club, says Katrien. We'll tell you who the manager is later, but we've had six in the last two years so I wouldn't worry too much about that anyway. As an approach to the player, it's certainly novel.
I think this could even help luring a manager, we're known for going for nobodies from abroad so this kind of signing will show them that we have a bit of ambition now and are more sensible with recruitment.

What bidding on a player and being told they are looking for 3.3x your offer?
I'd say Colchester have inflated it slightly but you'd struggle to get him for anything much less than 300k-400k. He's a higher end L1 quality player playing at a lower end L1, bit like JBG albeit a league below.
Even other Club's are starting to play with us, we'll be played with as Club's know our owner and CEO are nothing short of clueless.
If we had a manager he could assess wether he could increase his value by good coaching and his worth compared to players we are keeping.
£500k will be covered many times by the player sales and any payment above market value is simply risking a slight loss if he cannot be sold on for at least £500k.
If Roly wants to use player sales to minimise operating losses at the expense of not getting promoted then he will be looking to get every player replacement on the cheap.
If our current squad is worth £11m, the new squad will inevitable be worth less, say £5.5m. Whatever is the reduction in squad value, that amount goes to Staprix as cash against the money to cover operating losses.
Don't know what the average squad value is in League 1, is it the intention to use this as a benchmark in assembling a squad?.
These are the sort of questions we should be able to get answers to.
We are told the objective is to get promotion. Has the objective to break even be adjusted? If not how will a competitive squad for promotion be financed, given losses are presumably assumed to increase. How will the League 1 rules be met and the balance between loads and equity managed?
Instead of cheap words can we please have an insight into what ACTIONS are planned to deliver objectives and the specific challenges of life in League 1, or is that just too much communication.

That's how it works though, you bid low, they set a high price and you meet in the middle, highly doubt too many offers are accepted first time, getting in an offer early just shows intent to get the player.
I also want to say, this is all in theory, and based on what a normal club would do. So not getting my hopes up.

Equivalent of going in for Sergio Aguero at about 20m. It's just taking the piss out the club and player a bit, they will probably start to want a higher figure simply based on the business you are trying to do rather than any valuation on the player.
Moncur himself will want a higher wage than we offer him, and it could break down - he'll easily find himself another L1 team who would pay the wages. We are starting to be played around with because we are not like other club's (as you say, we're not in the normal club bracket). Other Club's have our numbe marked, so to speak.
So now into second week close season we've lost one Head Coach, failed to get another, failed to get a transfer target and a Chief Scout. The search for anyone to join the club in any capacity seemingly continues.
Meanwhile the CEO has a Gerald Ratner style PR meltdown.
I would have thought 500k is probably around about what he's worth, he's a goalscoring midfielder, there aren't many of those about. I can see him going for cheaper though because of the relegation, perhaps 350k-400k.

Certainly looks like we're turning the corner!
I think I'll stop looking on Transfermarkt.
The club (and some fans) will consider £500k to be too much money, we'll miss out on Mocur and he'll go on to be a world-beater worth millions.
That's just how it goes at Charlton these days.
