Vans and VAT question........

I'm looking to buy a van, Vivaro/Haice that sort of size. Why do most have + Vat but some have no VAT even by the same trader?
And if anyone is selling a van give me a yell, I'm not interested in anything over 70k (Miles for the benefit of HartleyPete)
or has had oil splashing about in the back.

VAT on second hand vehicles is generally odd. It's called the margin scheme. https://google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-notice-7181-the-vat-margin-scheme-on-second-hand-cars-and-other-vehicles&ved=0ahUKEwjpn67Vso7NAhUKIsAKHW0dDL0QFggbMAA&usg=AFQjCNFiJREvt_Ug6Xrf90rVr1UEBBCrvA&sig2=l4UFpbZAbD591jianq0rnA
This may, or may not, help! pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1132886

Most second hand goods are sold using the Margin scheme for VAT purposes. The dealer accounts for VAT on the difference between what he paid and what he sold it for, so although VAT is in there you don't know how much and you don't get a VAT invoice so you can't claim it back (otherwise the dealer gives away his margin).
However, if it's brand new or is sold by someone not using the margin scheme then you will get a VAT invoice and can recover the VAT if you are registered. The blocking of VAT recovery on cars doesn't extend to vans.
Hope this helps.
Where should I send my invoice?1 -
The other answers is of course that cash is tax free!
