The thing is yes it's shit to lose, but they mean nothing let's not forget England beat Germany in a freindly and we were gonna win the Euros only to be dumped out by Iceland a country with no professional football teams, Celtic lost to a semi pro side from Gibraltar last night, are they going to finish bottom of the spl no of course there not, freindlies are for trying new things out, I also don't think players are going to give there all, last thing you want is to pick up an injury in pre season, I think if we can keep majority of the team that started last night including watt ( as I think if his attitude and fitness stay) he will be on the of best players in league one, I'm expecting a top 6 finish.

I get what you're saying but this is Bromley we're talking about. Just shows how bad things have got if losing in a friendly to Bromley is OK.

No one said it's ok but it's hardly worth panicking about, any more than a win at Welling was worth overly celebrating.
It's also worth pointing out that we are only actually 2 leagues above Bromley, we're not a premier league side any more.

Exactly my point - just shows how bad things have got

just looked up our pre-season in the 11/12 season

    9 July 2011 Welling United 0 – 3 Charlton Athletic
    12 July 2011 Bristol City 1 – 2 Charlton Athletic
    15 July 2011 Cardiff City 1 – 0 Charlton Athletic
    20 July 2011 Aldershot Town 1 – 1 Charlton Athletic
    23 July 2011 Woking 0 – 0 Charlton Athletic
    26 July 2011 Charlton Athletic 1 – 0 Den Bosch
    27 July 2011 Bromley 0 – 4 Charlton Athletic
    30 July 2011 Millwall 4 – 3 Charlton Athletic

i dont know what league bromley were in then, but i would say woking are of the same calibre.

we didnt win but we had a goalless draw, then went on to win the league
  • She (Katrien) was there first half. Saw her take her seat next to her minder about 5/10 mins in. Looked very uncomfortable, with the minder doing most of the glad handing.

I don't know why squirrel face bothers.

Oyston aside, does any other owner have a minder with them at a football match?
Agree, she looks ever more isolated and there is no way back for her relationship with the fans. She must know that. I am around the same age as her and honesty believe I'd have gone by now - and I'm a fan! It's not niaivety, it's outright pigheddedness.

And even in a friendly, we still didn't beat Millwall!!

I thought we may have seen something of the signing from Stevenage at some point in the 2 friendlies.I realise he is young but a fee was paid for him so he must have some potential I guess

So my tuppence worth on the 2 halves.

1st half we played Ceballos and Muldoon in the middle, JJ on the left and Harriott on the right. Bromley played a high pressing game and this stopped us playing football, all to easily for my liking. Johnson was very vocal in his dismay at not having many options. Solly looked particularly off pace, didn't bomb forward and was very late in a challenge that rightly got him booked. Ceballos must have had a pass completion of less than 50%, and Ajose barely touched the ball. The less said about Harriott, the better. Henderson let the free kick in through his hands and was poorly positioned a couple of times. Only Konsa, Muldoon and Umerah came away with any credit, mainly due to being young and enthusiastic.

Second half we looked better, maybe because Bromley were tiring, but the pace of Sonupe, Holmes, Watt and then Hanlan caused them problems. The shape was better too, with Crofts and Foley holding in midfield, Watt and Ajose up front and Holmes/Sonupe wide. Omce Hanlan came on he switched to the right and Holmes played in the hole. Buxton, Foley and Crofts are very run of the mill players, not much to write about, but not many mistakes made either. Fox was very attacking, and Texand, Pope and Thomas had little to do. Watt still doesn't release the ball, and unfortunately that means he loses the ball a lot, but for some reason the crowd picks up whenever he has it, despite the predictable outcome. Holmes however doesn't release the ball strsight away, but runs past 3 or 4 players and looks to pass/cross. I must say Sonupe has impressed me so far, his combined 90 minutes over the past few days will probably win him a development contract, but he is incredibly lightweight.

All in all, a decent run out for most, with the second half team looking more in tune, but as it's so early on there isn't much to conclude from it, other than Jackson isn't a left winger any more than Nick Pope would be.

I hope there are a couple of players joining us in Austria, else we are very short of options as it is

That's an absolute nonsense. Three players out of position in a four man midfield? No wonder there was no fluidity in the team. I guess Slade was looking for Harriott to cut in and be a striking threat, and for Ceballos to be allowed to push up into the hole with Jackson tucking in where necessary, Muldoon sitting and Holmes-Dennis pushing up on the overlap. May also be why Solly didn't bomb on. Seems to me like that would create a lot more in the way of congestion in the middle - do you really need Ceballos and Harriott pushing up inside behind two strikers? But then I suppose it will have taught Slade some things that we already knew having watched the team last season; Jackson isn't the quickest player, Ceballos is far, far too lightweight to play in the middle, even as a 10 and is more cheerful on the wing, and Harriott is for some reason utterly, utterly petrified by the idea of playing on the opposite flank

first half was dire. Johnson needs to piss off. Its bad enough he's pretty shocking at his own job but then to continually bitch about others the whole time he plays is detrimental to other team mates and encouraging to opposition players. constructive criticism from a respect pro yes but he's not respected he's hardly a pro and he seems to come across as a complete arse. I know he's a big bloke but if i was in that team i would tell him to fuck off and focus on actually doing his job properly.

tbf though he had a point even if his approach to telling others about it was counterproductive. we were poor first half. only player to come out of it with some credit was cellebus who wanted the ball a lot and was the only one who seemed to be able to cause Bromley any problems. Bromley themselves were organised team with strength across the pitch that over ran us. their attackers easily got the better of our players in defence. and their midfield unfortunately showed how much off the pace Jackson is. Ajose after looking good against welling missed a couple of chances that i would of thought he was capable of putting away.

second half, what a difference. Ricky Holmes and Crofts took over the midfield for us. Holmes in particular looked very good. able to take a decent corner as well. Watt shows he can still beat a player but then unfortunately shows he still has trouble laying the ball off afterwards. Sonupe looks threatening down the wing. our goal scorer Hanlan came on and was equally threatening. pace, skill and not a bad finish for the goal. I was happy that pope was in goal for second half. i feel more relaxed with him there than Henderson. Overall a game of two halfs. same amount i had to drink as Bromley for some weird reason don't allow drinks to be taken out of the bar. whats that about? its a friendly?
  • Hanlan was excellent when he came on.

Obviously very eager to impress as he really put himself about.

Looking forward to seeing more of him.
  • Henderson told Johnson to fuck off at least once. You definitely can't put a young centre back with him, his confidence will be shot in seconds.

Johnson reminded me of that bloke in every causal game who knows all the theory and cliches but is a dogshit clogger when it comes to his part in the game. Uncomfortable to watch.

My expert opinion on Roger Johnson is that he's a massive cock and I hate him.

I'm not Johnson's biggest fan by any means, but I would say that the end of the season before last where he played alongside Gomez I felt he helped Joe out by talking him through the games. I don't think Gomez's confidence looked shot during that time.

No surprise that when I looked down at the first half team, Johnson was sitting on his own with his wife. The others were more or less together.

A lot of knicker-wetting on here about a practice match after just a week of pre-season training.

Bromley started with a strong side and then added their squad players as subs.
It's not that we even played our 1st choice team with everyone available for selection.
Nope - 2 different teams for 2 halves, each made up of a few 1st teamers, U21s and a bunch of triallists.
And guess what - the injured players didn't play.

A number of those players won't even be at the club by the time we play our first game.
And there will be new players yet to sign.

What does it tell us supporters after a week of pre-season training with nearly 4 weeks still to come?
Absolutely nothing - but it will give the manager an idea of which players to keep and which to let go, and to experiment with systems to get the best results.

Like another poster said, not going to panic over a friendly defeat and not going to celebrate an emphatic one.

Got a squad to try out in 2 halves of football, there will be good bits and bad bits. Which will matter when it is later in pre season and the squad looks settled.

Will save my panicking (if needed) for the last 2 friendlies.

1st goal looked like Roger Johnson No 5, got caught too far upfield & was blowing out his arse & never got back.

That's what I thought live as well.
  • Relegation Rog is a terrible player - as bad as Doherty and Llera. Why on earth did we resign him when he was so poor previously?

Last night I don't think our goalies covered themselves in glory.
One of the main things I remember from last season was hearing Roger Johnson shouting and doing his usual thing of blaming everyone else. Nothing has changed, so if staying I hope he's only used as a last resort!

I got my head bitten off last season when commenting on our loss to Sint Truidin (0-4). Absolutely appalling performance from what was a strong team vs a low Belgian Club... Bromley away was just a friendly etc etc so everyone pipe down!! :-)

Many good comments about Sonupe, so why haven't we taken him to Austria. If he has any chance of joining us he should be there, so assume Slade does not fancy

Why has yamfan/yamfam/the guy from Stevenage not been involved?
