Leyton Orient v Charlton Athletic
Saturday 23rd July 2016 … 3pm Kick-Off
Pre-Season Friendly

Introduction

Greetings from Leytonstone and East London… Home of the East End and famous streets like Brick Lane, this is where EastEnders is shot and where you should keep your eyes open for the likes of Jack the Ripper (Don’t worry he usually hangs around Whitechapel), it’s an area where the London 2012 Olympics were held is of course home to the birthplace of Cockney Rhyming Slang... Yes I will be doing this every away game…

This Saturday you’ll want to jump on the John Wayne, we all know it’s only a quick Walnut Whip as its time for these friendlies to get serious, it’s no longer a time for tinkering… For Russell Slade this Saturday it’s time for him to now find out his best squad for the season ahead

So as I’m sure the Kray twins said a few times… Let’s get down to Business

The Opposition
Name: Leyton Orient | Manager: Andy Hessenthaler
Ground: Brisbane Road | League: English League Two
Pre-Season Friendlies
- Italy U19s 1-0 Leyton Orient
- Wealdstone 1-2 Leyton Orient
- Dover Athletic 2-0 Leyton Orient
- Woking 0-2 Leyton Orient

Naturally 2011/12 was the last time we came up against our neighbours from slightly across the water.. It was the last day of 2011 when the two sides first met that season, the SKY cameras were in town and the Addicks had only lost one match all season (a 1-0 loss away at Stevenage)…

We didn’t get off to the best of starts when Goalkeeper: Ben Hamer was sent off within minutes of the match starting meaning we were always up against it… Yet within a few hours of welcoming in 2012, the Addicks were losing their second game of the season (also 1-0) and would only lose once more on the road that season.

image

It’s been very different seasons for the two clubs since that day…

In charge of Leyton Orient that day was Russell Slade (who is now Charlton Manager) and both sides have since suffered relegation with Orient dropping down a division two seasons ago… They didn’t have a bad start and looked like making an instant return until poor form saw them drop away from the Play-Offs, now Andy Hessenthaler (ex-Gillingham) will be hoping it’ll be second time lucky for his side that’ll now forever be playing in the shadow of the Olympic Stadium and West Ham.

Team News
Starting with Leyton Orient and one name fans should keep an eye on is Jay Simpson, a Striker who has been heavily linked with Charlton it’ll be interesting to see if he makes any kind of appearance against us tomorrow…

In terms of their transfer activity, ex-Manager: Kevin Nolan has left the club along with ex-Addick: Bradley Pritchard… Robbie Weir will be a name to watch (Having played a big part in Burton’s promotion last season) whilst Charlton fans will feel aggrieved that Yvan Erichot wasn’t offered to us after signing from St Truiden.

And so on to the Addicks… As already mentioned I’m sure we’ll start to get a good indication of who’ll start against Bury, yet until a new Goalkeeper is found you’d expect Dillon Phillips to start once more, neither Chris Solly nor Nick Ajose took part in our Austria fixtures so will potentially be unavailable

Finally… Ademola Lookman should soon return to the squad after England U19s were knocked out of the European Championships last night, having played in two matches (75mins / 90mins respectively) you should expect Lookman to be up to full fitness like everyone else, yet this Saturday might just come too soon for the youngster.

Prediction
As you can see from the above, Leyton Orient (like us) have had a mixed bag of friendly results with their only victories coming up against non-league opposition… Of course as we enter the final two weeks of pre-season anything that has happened prior to now will no longer matter as we’re now into the serious business of friendly matches… Still you’d expect a Charlton victory as anything else could see us in for a hard season.

Nicky Ajose could feature on Saturday, not all game.

With two weeks to go this game should be a complete step up in gear with first choices firmly if not completely embedded in Slades mind.

The squad is so far away from the above its absolutely scandalous. No lessons have been learned as far as I can see. The level of incompetence is staggering.

My early if cautious optimism is practically gone.

Just get out of our club you useless bastards.

Pretty non event weekend for Soapy, so all I need on top of that is a morale sappingly painful friendly reverse against the O's...

2-1 to the real East Enders!

Anyone know how much tickets might be? done Orient when we played them in the league but naff ground/ seats
  • Trying to avoid not making the easy trip to this one as I've decided to not go to any pre-season matches this time around and wait for the first league game at Bury to be surprised at how awful/unfit/uncoordinated/brilliant/amazing/potential champions (select as appropriate) we already are for this campaign

I'd imagine Lookman will be given 3/4 weeks off to compensate for time spent training and playing with U19s. Given our injuries we could see several academy players starting and comprising the entire bench.
  • Great to have such a preview for a friendly slightly across the water. The last sentence, though, puzzles me.

Still you’d expect a Charlton fixture as anything else could see us in for a hard season.

Cheers Thai... When writing it I meant to put victory, for some reason in my head at the time victory and fixture must have sounded the same briefly, dont ask or wonder how its just how my brain works lol!... Amended now

I'd expect this too yet hopefully he joined up the U19s around the same time our lads reported back for pre-season themselves so in an ideal scenario he's had the same pre-season as every at Charlton yet just somewhere different. Neither scenario wouldnt surprise me

(i.e. Wouldnt be surprised if he was involved against Ipswich or RKC yet then again wouldnt be surprised if he didnt appear)

My prediction is that Russell will ring up the Orient manager on Saturday morning to cancel the game as we can't get a side out.

Tex/Bauer/Ceballos wouldn't have been able to play anyway as they will have had hangovers from their night up Air & Breathe on the pull.

Fox would've got a call from the plumbing firm he works for, asking him to go in at short notice beacuse Mrs Threlfall had a leaking pipe.

Solly had forgotten about his mum's birthday bbq, so rang Russell pretending to have a belly ache.

And Harriott was up all night at the pet hospital beacuse his cat had swallowed a fly. No-one could work out why the cat had swallowed the fly and it was suspected that perhaps he'd die.

And we had no goalkeeper anyway.

This will be a good test for us .. I expect Orient to be well in the promotion race .. I hope to see that a consistent selection policy and pattern of play is taking or has taken place in the mind of Big Russ

Do you really think so Lincs? With all the outgoings and not much movement coming in I doubt Russ has anything close to a "consistent selection policy", I would expect tomorrows team to include a lot of youngsters and trialists.

The above of course affects what is in his mind for a pattern of play as well.

I guess when you are writing about Charlton, the brain automatically rejects the word 'victory'.

Didn't want to start a new thread JUST for this, but is anyone going to the Ipswich match at The Valley on Tuesday? I get in to Heathrow at 15:10 and if I can get down there early enough would love to meet some Lifers.

Also, apparently we're revealing our third kit today, which is good because they too wear reds and the thought of wearing bibs a week away from the first match of the season is depressing...

I will be doing a Preview for Ipswich on Monday at the latest...

Because these are only friendlies I'm not rushing to write up the previews for them (Wasn't even planning on doing them) as there isnt the interest in them from everyone unlike the proper League and Cup matches

Second kit is going to be the purple one from last year, with the sponsors changed. I'm happy with that, really like that look, and it means I won't feel any pressure to buy a kit since I much prefer the UoG logo.

And just before 3pm, supporters can log on to the club's official Facebook page to watch a live broadcast from Charlton's dressing room where the kit will be revealed before the players head out to sign for other clubs

Yeah, it's cute. I really like that Olly (in particular, possibly George and others as well) are really trying to do more FB Live things, and just generally putting out a lot more "behind the scenes" content. It's something even some of the top clubs still kind of struggle with and/or are skeptical about, so I really appreciate it.

Ian Liddle on twitter made a great point with the Arsenal signing of Rob Holding from Bolton earlier... Basically it looks like whenever they sign a new player they do a short quiz on how well you know about their new player, I know many would mock the idea being done at Charlton with the amount of random overseas players that sign but I thought it was quite clever of Arsenal

Harry Lennon remains on the sidelines, as does Alou Diarra, Ahmed Kashi and Patrick Bauer, but El-Hadji Ba may recover in time to play a part at the Matchroom Stadium.

The friendly is likely to come too soon for Nicky Ajose who has been struggling with an ankle knock, but should be fit to return for the visit of Ipswich Town to The Valley on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Dillon Phillips will continue in goal after keeping a clean sheet in the midweek friendly in Austria.
