For anybody who was at Bournemoth a few years back when we lost 2-1 on the opening day well it was almost a carbon copy of how overrun, and uncreative our midfield was and I only hope Holmes is the only midfielder who stays a first team regular this season and thought he looked very good.
Thought the defence was pretty solid, didn't see the penalty conceded but not heard many complaints but otherwise thought Pearce looked very good. Couldn't fault Rudd either.
Had already left by the time the Johnson incident happened, he can do one as far as i'm concerned. I didn't like his attitude when he was mouthing back to Slade in the Ipswich friendly and I would rather take a chance on a half-fit Bauer or give Konsa a go than see Johnson appear in a Charlton shirt again.
Of all the key players who've left us i'd say Harriott and Cousins haven't been replaced and the urgency to replace both should be top of Slade's priorities. If it means going over budget then it has to be done or we're going to be in serious trouble this season.
We got turned over by a very ordinary Bury team which the class of 11/12 would have beaten comfortably today.9 -
Gents I have spent the afternoon sitting on a beach in Cantabria, partly because I have not spent £500 on season tickets I am a little sun burnt but I have had a great day. I know it is difficult not to but if they don't care and they have no clue why should we?4

I have no time for any Charlton fan giving this ownership money or help, with the exception of money in that of a form to protest (attend to protest - as we have a right to do). Back after a long day on the road, well, train, and little to show for it sadly.
A very mediocre performance from "our" lads is how I'd sum it up but for me, this was a group of players that I didn't recognise - literally, but one which I felt little affinity with. That is a Fanny First and a worrying sign...
So, when I was told of Rojo's post match rant, I was angry but in a weird way, there was slight " So what ? He's not really a Charlton player " because that's how the influx of quantity over quality players in the past 18 months or so has made me feel.
Of course, I realise familiarity with the newbies takes more than 90 minutes but far too many players of questionable quality have been paraded before us of late that I am finding it increasingly difficult to relate to them. Heaven knows how Jacko, Morgan & CS must feel but I guess that goes with the territory as professional footballers.
You've probably guessed by now that today's initiation into L1 has left me feeling very flat. Unfamiliar faces, too many hopeful long balls out of defence when not under pressure, little passion & creativity overall - we needed to hit the ground running but sadly merely jogged.
RS has stated that he expects to get more players on board but surely RD's wallet will be zipped once & for all before too long in his unrelenting quest to balance the books? Tex & Lookie are probably clearing out their lockers as we speak whilst Kashi, Diarra, Bauer & Lennon still remain on the sidelines. Not a recipe for a settled team any time soon.
But it wasn't all doom & gloom today. The lack of familiar faces on the pitch was balanced by the many familiar faces supporting our team. It's always good to meet up again with those that have shared the highs & lows of previous seasons but also to put faces to names where Lifers are concerned. Today, I was the fortunate recipient of hugs from Ricky Otto and Clem Snide who introduced themselves to me as well as Seth Plum & the lovely Paddy among others. This camaraderie is by far the best part of matchdays during these "transitional" times & I echo others' sentiments that our support today was very special.
Let's hope that RS's team produces the kind of performances required to bring supporters out in numbers on a freezing Saturday afternoon up north in January. There's clearly a lot of hard work ahead...

Goals here. The most concerning element is the way the players trudge back after each goal. Not fight or urgency to get back on with it.1 -
Predicted 2-0 defeat and sadly was right. First half was awful, up to they scored we were playing better. Midfield is a joke also novak should have scored 10 mins into the second half. Hanlon tried when he came on as did lookman. This is going to be a long season.2

Bury were better than us and deserved their win. There are no straws to clutch at.2

I didn't go but to me it looks like we set up wrong. This won't be a popular opinion but Jackson should not be a player at this club. He's been great for us over the years and is a great captain but football is passing him by on the pitch and he's being carried through games.
At any level of football pace is dangerous and from the comments above we had none but leave lookman on the bench! I know he hasn't had a full preseason but in my eyes if he's in the squad he's fit. Rest him for cup game.
If slade is a 4-4-2 man I do worry as it's a very flat formation and you need good wingers and at least one creative centre midfielder for it to work. Our forwards will be starved of service and we will be a very mediocre team if he persist with this.
If it were me I'd give the kids a go mid week. I'm hoping we have a couple of midfield gems in there chomping at the bit to get in the first team and make a impact1 -

Nothing moves faster than the ball on the pitch, you don't need eleven quickies on the pitch. Jackson has never been blessed with pace. He also returned to Football for the U19s on June 8th when he played in Mexico in a friendly for 75mins, that means he returned to playing Football a whole month before any of the rest of the squad meaning he got less rest over the Summer... He's bound to be fit as he wouldnt have appeared yesterday yet he's still only 18-years old and we need to ensure he doesnt burn out too early in the season!!

No I'm not shocked at the result (Before I'm accused of being naive or wearing rose tinted glasses) yet at the same time I refuse to jump on the panic bandwagon yet!!
As I said a few weeks ago... A terrible start is the best we can hope for... If we started too well then Roland / Katrien will refuse to sign ANYONE else because they'll think one game makes a season and they'll think that the squad that started yesterday is good enough, now they've seen we've lost to Bury there might be a bit of hope that we'll still bring in a few additions5 -

That is equally true off the pitch as on it. Duchatelet & Meire appalling & inept strategy precisely does this. It runs through every thing they do.
Duchatelet, IMO thinks that success on the pitch will come as a by product of getting the numbers right off the pitch. This can be the only reason why normal football practise is routinely ignored. Charlton were effectively relegated by April. There was months to plan for a change of manager, get a chief scout in, so that the pre season could get off to a flier, targets could be identified early, so that a pre season acutally could mean a pre season. Not the first 5 games to be the effective pre season.
Gaps on the pitch could have been identified, instead of selling off of all the quality in the squad & leaving the manager scrambling for players for last minute. Meire has lied to Slade as she has constantly dissembled to the rest of us. Slade should have got it in writing about the transfers as it is clear that the owners & Meire's mentality that head coach is there to manage what is put infront of him is still very much current.
The consequence is the squad that was put out yesterday. A midfield that was never going to prosper or provide any creativity. Getting a star striker in is pointless if there is no pace on the wings, creativity in the middle of the park or any service. Lots of kids on the bench. One shot on target the whole game against one of the allegedly weakest teams in League one & favourites for relegation.
No team has an automatic right to be successful or maintain a league postion without doing the right things. The Bury result & all the results that are likely to follow (unless squad weaknesses are adressed) will be due to an abject neglect of doing the right things off the pitch. This has been modus operandi of Duchatelet & Meire since Duchatelet bought the club. It is an utterly flawed strategy that is incomprehensibly badly executed. Charlton are currently the mirror image of a successful football club & a prime example of how not to do things.11 -
Charlton will continue to struggle if the basics off the pitch are not valued & properly executed. No good will come from the owners values which are not aligned & focused for success on the pitch. For a club to be successful everyone in the club needs to be focused on that goal. The supporters need to understand that sensible, coherent & timely decisions are being made at the club.
My real worry & concern is that decisions contrary to how a successful football club is run will continue to be made. Charlton has no divine right to be in league one. Unless the gaps in the team are properly addressed & bad decisions continue to be made then Charlton could easily fall further. I really don't want that to happen.3 -

You could have Klopp, Klinnsmann or some other brilliant 'Kl' managing this club and you would still have the same issues. The wins will be hard to come by. The owners have got to speculate to accumulate, invest properly in the team and we will get out of reverse gear. It seems to me that Slade is making it apparent we desperately need more quality and depth. Our owners have other ideas though, as we all know.3 -
The Douchbag doesn't care about winning football matches. It's all about the bottom line and people need to manage their expectations accordingly with this nutter.
Staying in this division will be a massive achievement in itself

Well that was shit.
Got up early to meet up with a few mates at Euston, lifers among them, have a few beers and bit of banter in Manchester then get cab to Bury.
What followed was 90 minutes of total crap.
One word of warning though to charlton fans trying to run on pitch, while we all want the regime to go and we are angry and frustrated at the way our club is being run it's not worth getting banned for 2 or 3 seasons.
And as for the grey haired old bloke trying to encourage the younger fans on to the pitch, and yes we all know who he is grow up mate2
