Anyone going to Lloret de Mar in the next few weeks..

check your hotel as two were closed today and the reason is amusing. There was an electrical problem near the Sun Village hotel, and the electrical company had to cut the electricity for a while to sort it out. The Sun Village Hotel had a generator to cover for small emergencies, but when it had to power the hotel for an hour it caught fire, and the fact that the hotel stored butane bottles and other inflamable around it made it worse. The hotel was evacuated while firemen put out the fire. The electricity guys then turned up and found the entire hotel was running on an ilegal supply of light where they had connected a cable to the general supply and had been getting free light for a year. This should really have been obvious, as the company had cut them off the year before for non payment of 150,000 euros. The town hall then closed the hotel indefinately for having unsafe gas and electric supplies, so the 240 guests had to be relocated, while the staff will all probably lose their jobs. To cap it all, the elctricity company (Endesa) went to another hotel in the área owned by the same family, the Savoy, and found they were also basically stealing electricity, so that closed as well.
Sometimes, you have to laugh at the corruption in Spain (there is no government still, as the Socialists refuse to abstain in the appointment of the Partido Popular given the level of corruption they have not only allowed to florish in their ranks but actively concealed on some occasions - when the pólice demanded the computers from company headquarters to check the hard drives in a case of corruption regarding the treasurer, Barcenas, the government handed them over after smashing them up with axes). As someone who works in tourism near the Costa Brava, the style of robbing electriciy is new and striking, but that a hotel chain would commit fraud, and will probably now declare bankrupt to avoid any consequences is just another day in the life.

Do people actually go there? Popped in once many years ago to watch a Bruno fight (I think). Truly awful place

Live and work in Calella. I dunno about the Dockyard, but a saturday afternoon at the Valley followed by a night out in Greenwich is something you just don't get here.

Got friends who used to work the season out there about 20-25 years ago.
They bought and sold their house over here making enough to buy a place in the mountains behind lloret about 10 years ago.
They continued to work the seasons in bars and last year got a lease on their own bar in fenals.
Hard work but they are loving it and looking to buy the bar outright.
