This sort of thing not covered by the NHS or is it just a case of avoiding the waiting list so she can't get back to playing sooner?
Bit of both, I believe it's not 'urgent' in the eyes of the NHS and also quite a specialist procedure.
I sympathise with her situation. From my experience the NHS is not that good at dealing with sporting injuries and I've had to spend a small fortune of private physio treatment.
A while ago now, but I was advised not to get a knee op because I wouldn't play again after the NHS had butchered me. I was able to struggle on until I was 35 without one although I had to manage the pain etc... Arthritis in both knees now for some reason, but at least I have memories of playing. I got injured at 21. I don't know of any players I played with over the years who had ops who were able to carry on. It isn't like professionals who get the best, you have to go private or manage the injury.
I am "liking" this because I appreciate you sharing your story, but that breaks my heart.
Do you mind if I ask what the injury was? It's been the case for ~15-20 (maybe more) years now that arthroscopic surgeries on torn cartilage in the knee is pretty straightforward. I don't know if this occurred beforehand or what the NHS did to you but would be curious.
I'm 52 now - I did tear my cartilage. Played a 90 minute game, then an indoor 5 a side game that evening. Was a bit tired I remember and didn't fancy it but was doing it as a favour. Went to dribble past an opponent but my shoe gripped the gym floor and my knee came out of it's socket. Two mates with similar injuries who had to pack in the game advised me. The NHS just took their catilage out and told them they couldn't play anymore. I wasn't going to have that. The NHS had no interest in them being able to continue to play and the same would have applied to me.
Curb_It's link bumped so I don't have to keep going back to to it on page 1 whenever i want to see how the fund is progressing. A credible £4,270 raised so far towards the £5,000 target
I can't donate to Gemma's fund because I'm opposed to private health treatment but so people don't think I'm a skinflint I'll donat £5 to a suitable charity.
Why?
For the same reason I'm opposed to private education.
Anyway, I've donated £5 to medicins sans frontieres.

Give the guy/gal some slack, many are opposed to Private Ed/healthcare for varying reasons,

i wasn't digging him out, just curious with regards to the private health.
Is anyone else having an issue with the donation form? I type in all my details, click continue and it just keeps me on the same page?
That old chestnut? Dig deep Lucky!
To answer your question, no problems for me, just had a look. Try in another browser? (that's right, ten years as a technology professional and that's all I've got)

Thirty years as a tech professional and I can confirm that 'Try another browser' is quite often the solution (but obviously not to getting rid of Roland and Katrien).

Really happy for her that she's back.
