Bob Dylan - Nobel Prize

Great news and well deserved.
Even if his later stuff has not be great (and he was terrible at the Hop Farm live) his body of work is staggeringly good.0 -
Well done, Bobby, and richly deserved. A genius and one of my heroes.

Just saying, I can't believe he is still alive.
Well done Bob, even though none of your songs rhyme1 -
Great news, been a very big fan for well over 50 years, well done Bobby0

can't think of another 'songwriter' who's won the nobel ..
still Dylan was always as much poet and on the money social commentator as he was a songsmith .. well deserved accolade for a genius of our generation1 -
What next for the Bobster, Sports Writers' Footballer of the Year?0

He'll have to go some to react to his win in a better way than Doris Lessing did.

A very welcome surprise, can only echo what those above say, very appropriate and well deserved.
Probably my favourite artist if I had to pick only one.0 -
I couldn't believe the whince on my face when I read that. He's a decent songwriter, but Nobel Prize, WTF? They really should sort themselves out that lot. Everyone with a Nobel, your work has just been downgraded. And as for poor souls like Lise Meitner, their little sub-atomic particles must be spinning in their graves.0

You can't compare a Nobel prize in literature to one in science. On that basis no literature winner would be worthy.Stig said:I couldn't believe the whince on my face when I read that. As a living writer (you have to be alive to win) he has influence millions and at its best his work is fantastic poetry and other poets have won the Nobel prize.
That his songs are so often covered shows that he is more than a "decent" songwriter. His lyrics are so poignant, use such a wide variety of references and are very evocative, to me and many others.
I know Insufferable Addick is a big fan of Dylan and that obviously must make anyone question him but Dylan is so good he can even rise above that.

I've heard that Keith Richards is getting the Nobel Prize for ChemistryStig said:I couldn't believe the whince on my face when I read that. He's a decent songwriter, but Nobel Prize, WTF? all a matter of opinion .. years ago I saw that Saul Bellow had won the nobel lit gong .. so .. went to the library and took out two of his 'best' .. Just NOT to my taste ..Stig said:I couldn't believe the whince on my face when I read that. He's a decent songwriter, but Nobel Prize, WTF? They really should sort themselves out that lot. now Philip Roth ? .. would be a well deserved winner in my opinion .. BUT .. he's upset a lot of people and the brilliant 'Portnoy's Complaint' is regarded by many 'critics' as obscene and pornographic ...
the most neglected literary genius of the 20/21st century is Stephen King .. if Bellow is worth one, he's worth ten3 -
Couldn't agree more about KingLincsaddick said:

Well deserved for his poetry/songwriting.
Apparently, he's been promised the Peace Prize if he stops playing the harmonica.2 -
Couldn't agree less about King. Saul Bellow is a fantastic writer - Herzog, Humboldt's Gift etc.stonemuse said:

Never been a fan of his music, but as a music icon, its almost a case of saying 'I saw Bob Dylan live' ?0 -
He's got some nice Sinatra covers in his set at the moment.The_President said:Playing live in Luxembourg on Saturday night.
