Thoughts on Sheringham

Really hope the paper talk that we are interested in Sheringham is paper talk only.

I feel he would be possibily the most disasterous signing we have ever made, and that has nothing to do with the fact he is 41 years old.

His heart is simply not in it anymore. We can see that by the amount of times he's been captured in the gossip columns out clubbing in the last five months. To get out of the Championship, we're going to need players with a real desire, prepared to bust a gut. Its going to be harder than everyone imagines and we're going to need players determined to score more on the pitch than they do in Funky Buddha's. We've already got a couple of those, and look where that has got us.

Sheringham was a great player, one we have tried and failed to sign in the past. Like JFH, it should of just been left at that, because when we do finally capture these targets, its always too late.

Agreed 100%. He would be a disastrous signing and I have serious doubts that Murray would sanction it unless it was on a pay as you play basis.

Exactly, whilst i feel we need some experienced players he wouldn't really help us. He certainly wouldn't play 46 matches in a season at his age. Young hungry strikers please. Sharp or Eastwood. I see Sheff Weds had a bid turned down for Sharp yesterday.

I don't agree, the guy has one of the best footballing brains around - however we shouldnt do a Hasselbaink and expect him to be in the first 11, a coaching role and on the bench for me.

just because someone has good vision on the pitch does not mean they can transfer it to a coaching role.

A big difference between knowing a subject and being able to transfer that knowledge cohesively and intelligently to others. You need even more desire to be a successful coach than you do a player, and you certainly have to have certain characteristics.

I'm not sure Sheringham has those. He may have the aura one day to be a figurehead with other people in the background doing all the work, but i can't see him as part of a coaching team.

    Big no to Sheringham.

I'd imagine the paper talk just comes from lazy journalism linking Pardew with any of his old players that West Ham may want to unload.

In a similar way that Curbs will be linked to any of his old Charlton Players that may want to jump ship.

no but you can use one or two experienced heads surely? someone who can turn a game with 20 minutes left?

I'd take Stephen Hawking as long as I see the back of Lisbie and 'Charlton Start Striker' Marcus Bent.

Yeah, that's fair enough but I think 41 is a bit much really. His off the field stuff is a bit worrying and you'd have to be concerned that with a tight wage bill he'd be an extravagance we could not afford. I think De Zeeuw would be a much better older head, or even Kiely.

    ..................

Cause and effect...I think he and Curbs had a bust up with Curbs deciding that his days as a first team player were over and consequently he's out enjoying himself and playing the odd reserve match, and fair enough. If he were to come to Charlton I'd expect him to cut down on the nights out, but anyway at 41 he's too old, let him finish his career in the States, or even worse send him back to Millwall.

Be a good signing for a season. Probably get 10 goals a season in 20 starts and would take a little pressure off who-ever our front 2 may be (Lisbie and Dickson?).

Agree with all thats been said.

Sheringham would be a disaster of Hasselwank proportions. The fella simply isnt good enough any more, hasnt done it for 2 years.

Dont like us being linked with all these West Ham players, Jimmy Walker, jesus. Might as well have Jimmy Crankie.

Somehow Pardew has got to find us a striker that will get 25-30 goals next season, like we had with Hunt and like all the top teams in the Championship need. Harewood is capable of that. Sell the Bents and get Eastwood, Harewood, one other with Dickson as back up and we'll be bubble bathing.

Jimmy walker is a cracking keeper, albeit 4 foot tall.
Don't want to see him leave the club, rate him as our secend keeper behind rob green.

Great player in his time but we don't need another ageing mercenary thanks having just offloaded the last one.

Besides he looks too much like Albert Steptoe for my liking:-)
