Should beat then but we wont. FA Cup game a few years back is typical - go 1-0 up very early on & should win easily - we don't follow through & end up losing.
If we lose on Saturday I reckon Slade will follow through.
don't think much of them as a rival but I guess the game means more than say, us playing Watford.
Where would Gillingham rank within our London rivalries then? For me Palace and Millwall are our biggest games, then West Ham. I can't be bothered to rank the rest but I'd put Gillingham somewhere around the same level as Brentford and Orient.
I think the main reason why we would care about the Gillingham game more than others in our division is because our club's fans are more likely able to point to where Gillingham is on a map than most other clubs' fans.
Hilariously, Gillingham count Swindon as one of their biggest rivals. Watch out Wiltshire.
That's nothing to do with geographical proximity, but due to some bad history between the two clubs.
Charlton is historically located in Kent until it became part of London. Gillingham claim that they're the only true Kentish team in the Football League, and they also think we are evil for daring to extend the Valley Express into Kent even though loads of fans live in Kent...
Basically they will really want to beat us.
Also didn't someone post the link last month to some herbert on Twitter who ranked us the worst football club in London and he was a Gills fan?
Absolutely disgusting feed, amazingly he has over 1K followers. Would love him to repeat his bile against Charlton in the away fans pub on Saturday, see if he makes it out without getting his tracksuit ripped.
Charlton (the place) has been part of a London borough since 1900 (The Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich) so for the entire life of the football club, the club has always come under London...
Personally, Gillingham mean little to me in terms of rivalry.
But surely it means a bit more than Rochdale or Oldham ? Actually I'd say it's more exciting than say Bournemouth or AFC Wimbledon.
Barely
To me it's the same level as several London(ish) teams - Fulham, QPR, Brentford, Orient, Watford - the teams where we aren't really true rivals, but where there isn't any particular excitement (that you get from playing the likes of Arsenal, Spurs or Chelsea) either

And presumably more to do with neither club having a natural rival in the Football League, so using some nonsense from 30/40 years ago to conjure up a rivalry...

Palace and Brighton?
Exactly the same, didn't they have a fight in the 1600's and decide that they're rivals ever since ? Pretty much the same with Gillingham & Swindon.

To be honest I'm not sure where I'm going with this, it's 4am and I've got insomnia.
From a Charlton as a whole perspective I think they're pretty irrelevant other than being close.
From a personal perspective of being born and bred in Maidstone I hate them, not as much as Millwall and Palace but they're probably next (excluding Celtic and Man U).
Quite relieved I'm on route to Cornwall for a wedding, as just like against Millwall, I'm sure we'll capitulate which will be like a red rag to all the armchair gills fans down this way.
PS I think that weird Swindon rivalry is/has died out a bit as I'm sure the last few times they've only took a few hundred to each other.
Historically Gillingham has nearly always been division or two below us and is a smaller club than CAFC ..
as we are now both in the same league, the game takes on more significance, though perhaps for Gills fans rather than sniffy Addicks who consider Gillingham to be little more than imposters from Kent and always due a thrashing from the mighty CAFC.. thing is though, both clubs are under the cosh and CAFC fans have no good reason to belittle the Gills .. reason ? .. whenever did reason play a part in football fans' thinking ((:>)

I get that rivalry between Gillingham and Swindon though as you could say its hilarious that there is a big rivalry between Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday but over the last few seasons there really has been.
Based on @se9addick's listing I'd go with my top four as
(1) Crystal Palace & Millwall (2) West Ham United (3) Sheffield Wednesday & Gillingham
Its a day to go out for a few beers and still get back the same day enabling you to make your excuses that the trains were delayed rather than being up North and having to get a booked train or last train back to London at only 8pm when you are just getting the taste.
The only thing that can ruin the day is the team.
But come 7pm and after chewing the fat it is all but a distant memory.

But it's Swindon though. That town in Wiltshire known largely for its unique approach to town planning?

But whats happened between Swindon and Gillingham in the past though
You could say the same about Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday, i.e. why would one of the major city clubs have issue with a village in South East London that has nothing but a few retail parks
don't think much of them as a rival but I guess the game means more than say, us playing Watford.

Because we're both massive.
Sheffield Wednesday because of their ego's... Charlton because of the average fan waist size?

I'm 6.4ft and 10st... My conscious and gut is clear
Not much apart from the fact I know it means loads to them so it's a added bonus if we beat them. Work with 1 Gills supporter but he's one of the only people I can have proper football conversation as he's a proper Supporter unlike the other plastics.

Steer clear of Elfs though it'll cost you a fortune won't it Ricky?

I've given elfs a fair bit of stick but he has been known to buy his fair share of rounds. He does have deep pockets and short arms though it must be said.
its like having a rivalry with someone 45 miles away..... hang about dont palace have one with brighton. not a derby, so they need to stop making it one after all we may win if they dont label it one as our assholes fall out as soon as the word derby is mentioned.
