Big Data = huge companies making billions of dollars now (Google, IBM, Oracle, Facebook) Internet of Thing = huge companies hoping to make millions in the future (Google, Apple, Samsung, Microsoft)
Very real terms that are shaping economies right now. Corbyn's statement does sound a bit wanky and jingoistic, but it's hard to argue with the actual point.
Just because you've never heard of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Don't let your prejudice run away with you. Or you might become beyond parody. ;-)
Big data is a bullshit corporate buzz phrase for something that has existed for a long time and people have been using for a long time. Along with it we get data mining and data science which are different from standard data analysis but most companies don't know the difference.
A data scientist in most cases is a data analyst that is better at selling himself and has managed to persuade some corporate management monkey that what he does is worth double the pay despite it being exactly the same as what a million analysts are already doing.

Yeah, right, coz every 68 year old is just tripping with this bullshit. Just because you've heard of it doesn't mean it isn't bullshit.

You both have good points on this.
Both IoT and Big Data are buzzwords, but there is also a lot of legitimate technical development going on within those disciplines. I don't think Corbyn, or any politician, would be wrong to say "these are two emerging sub-industries that our country should look to focus on."
Amazing. Especially when you factor in the fact that yank crowds are only used to shouting "Defence.....defence...." repeatedly and think that's exciting crowd noise.

Yeah Tom Petty was from Gainesville. I used to live there. There were rumors that American Girl was about a girl who jumped off one of the dormitories at the uni there.
"The Swamp" as it's known, where the university of Florida play their football is incredibly impressive. It's so loud you could hear it clearly from my ex-gfs place about a mile away.

I'm so pleased (though not as much as your ex) that you didn't get that sentence muddled up.

By all accounts, in the 68/69 season you could hear the crowd roar at the Valley when we scored all the way to the shops near the Blackheath Standard. We were getting some big crowds that season.
And I lived near there and I remember hearing the who concert from my back garden.
That must be over a mile away from the ground as the crow flies.

Tories admit they have no idea what encryption is but they want to ban it anyway; considered to be the party of the future.

That answers a lot of questions.
