FA Cup and Nicky Bailey

  • One of my housemates is Nicky Bailey’ ex father in law. We talk about Nicky quite a lot. Apparently after that penalty miss he was absolutely distraught but people forget if it wasn’t for his goals and assists we wouldn’t even got to the playoffs. Also he never wanted to leave us, he basically got forced out  because of the wages he was on.!

Gets a lot of stick for that one penalty miss, but he was superb for us throughout his time here. Shame so many seem to criticise him retrospectively really. Don’t understand it
That penalty plus diving and constantly feigning injury made many people's opinion of him turn like old milk.

Good footballer, but the diving and fake injuries just made him feel a bit fake.

Johnny William's but with added goals and assists!
  • Williams invited contact to win his free kicks where as Bailey just fell over and feigned injury when he was out of puff and the opposition were in his general vicinity.

Lol, that's an interesting slant on things.

What about Bailey's goals - did he feign those too?
  • Really good player for us at the time.

Worse ; he gotva Southend player sent off for a non tackle by rolling along the ground as if he had been rolled out of a Persian rug.
Really quite disgraceful act to be honest. I think we got a goal from the incident as well.
We stayed down there that night and asked the DJ to play a dedication to Nicky Bailey in TOTS after the game.

The 1.4m we got for him was not be sneezed at though, a month after that play off game

Bailey's goals and his willingness to fly into tackles were great in the early part of his Charlton career but I think they masked a poor level of fitness that prevented him from bossing the midfield with more regularity.
  • Nicky Bailey got 25 goals from 89 games from midfield, that is outstanding stuff.

In his first season in the Championship we were a basket case and he was about our only bright spot and in his second season we’d have been nowhere near the Play Offs without him, he dragged us through games at times all by himself.

  • I can swallow all the play acting with Bailey because he had earned his stripes before that.

His was a shining light in a shit period and its shame that some of his antics are remembered more the positives.
