6 restaurants in the Michelin Guide in Lincolnshire Seth. Think you're eating in the wrong places. Treat yourself to a copy of the Good Food Guide / Michelin Guide.
My sister, who sadly died in Lincoln the night before the first game of the season, was persuaded to move to Normanby-by-Spital many years ago by her husband. I know she had misgivings and regrets leaving London, but I have a nephew and nieces in the area and they have made lives for themselves up there. I wouldn't choose to move to Lincolnshire myself, but apart from being flat and windy and pretty cold it seems fair enough...I always imagine folk there are pretty obsessed with cars and motorbikes which is also fair enough because getting around is a chore. I have to admit for a rural place I have never had a decent meal in Lincoln or Lincolnshire. However in London one uses the word 'pleb' don't you know, not 'yokel', I couldn't get used to the manner of speech up there, me duck.
Never had a decent meal in Lincoln.....wow you can't have looked far! Next time you're up try The Bell in Harmston.....and that's just one of many!
I should have mentioned that I am a vegetarian, not many people on this site know that.
a vast percentage of the nation's vegetables are grown in Lincolnshire .. you could go to most any farm and pick your own ((:>)
The East Europeans can pick them, but can residents of Lincolnshire cook them?
good point and it brings up a whole new topic .. do 'people' still do much cooking ? .. or has microwaving and 'oven heating' become the norm despite the TV overkill of cookery programs and the fact that cookery books by celebrity chefs sell like (or better than) hot cakes ? .. there are scores of vegetable packing plants/factories up and down Lincolnshire where vegetables and other food of all types are cooked then frozen and/or packed by the ton .. but I know that is not what you mean .. go back to Lincoln and look around .. Trip Advisor alone recommends 10 veggie restaurants in Lincoln ..
Just looked at the trip advisor list. Some are closed, some are fancy sandwich places, and of the others that are still open and list a menu, all apart from one seem to have one vegetarian option only and based on that I wouldn't go, indeed one asks you to talk to the staff first like you're an oddity (which in my case is true), none of the trip advisor list is a specialist veggie place. Now the single option in most places may well be nice, but is it a risk worth taking when the main thrust of all the places listed on the trip advisor list is (understandably) all about meat? If Lincolnshire has all those lovely fresh vegetables available great, but they seem to take second place to flesh. I do eat when up there, i don't refuse the food, but I have never had a meal decent enough to make me feel like going back.
so, Lincolnshire despite its thousand upon thousand square acres of food producing soil, is a vegetarian wasteland so far as you're concerned .. best then perhaps that you stick to the sophisticated metropolis where although one might get poisoned by diesel and petrol fumes, at least one can find a slap up feast of tofu and bean sprouts .. but please come back soon to Lincolnshire, we miss you ((:>)
Just looked at the Michelin guide, the Bronze Pig for example is on that one and trip advisor. Pretty expensive they are, but if you don't fancy the only main course these places offer you've had it. So going there is always going to be a risk for me, it could be great or it could be dire. The simple solution is for these places to advertise, in very big letters, that if you try the vegetarian option and think it's awful, you get your money back no questions asked, then i would risk it.
I see your point re choice, but this must occur in a lot of places. How do you normally find good vegetarian restaurants in places you are unfamiliar with?

question of supply and demand seth .. no-one is going to open a gaff with an extensive vegetarian menu and then sit back and wait for the non meat eating diners who never arrive .. quick way to lose a lot of money Lincolnshire is a BIG county with a small population most of whom are not vegetarian, though I know a few ladies who are .. they tend to just not eat meat rather than go for tailor made vegetarian options .. although incidentally, Tesco, M&S and I am sure all the other major food retailers have fairly extensive vegetarian ready meals available .. just eat it cold or pop it in the microwave/conventional oven .. easy peasy
Not sure it is that straight forward Lincs, as a meat & fish eater, I would happily eat in a good vegetarian restaurant, and I am sure plenty of others would.

Although I do take your point regarding risk.
lol.. VERY risky to open a restaurant which is just vegetarian .. and I am sure that a lot of 'devoted' vegetarians simply would not eat in an establishment where meat/fish is prepared for consumption, through a fear of 'cross contamination' or just on ethical grounds

To be honest it is often trial and error. My original point is that for me trial and error has been successful on occasion in various places, but sadly not in Lincoln or Lincolnshire. Indeed the very worst baked jacket potato and beans I have ever had, and this is a very simple thing that it is hard to mess up, was in Lincolnshire. I accept that I am one of a tiny minority and it is less than reasonable to have an equal number of choices that a meat or fish eater has, but I have often had better luck elsewhere than in such a rural county as Lincolnshire which I have been to many times.
You may have misunderstood, to clarify, as a meat and fish eater, I would happily eat a non meat and non fish meal in a good vegetarian restaurant.
I got that and I have often eaten superb Indian vegetarian food and like you would happily eat any tasty vegetarian food .. back to the 'Lincolnshire question' my point is that opening a purely veggie restaurant in the county would, in my opinion, be a VERY risky undertaking, although one might prosper in (say) Lincoln city or Stamford, catering for the 'richer' clientele and/or tourists .. but it'd have to be your money at risk, I'd rather open a McDonalds to make some cash ((:>) (sorry seth)
Absolutely no need to apologise. I am well used to the situation anyway, and the best solution is to cook the food myself, just that it is hard if you're away from your own kitchen.

nice .. I spend a LOT of time away in hotels etc .. a good option for me is M&S .. their selection of salads, fruit and non meat/fish fare is superb .. I am not a big meat eater anyway .. problem is of course that during the winter salad and cold food can be a bit errrrrrrr bland ... anyway, good luck in finding some nice restaurants at the RIGHT PRICE !!

Lincoln getting to the 5th round of the FA Cup really is an unexpected consequence of the Brexit vote !
if you don't know, then best not to comment

As an Imps fan for 38 years, I haven't got a clue WTF you're on about.
It's all gone quiet over there.
I was brought up in Navenby, 10 miles south of Lincoln. When we used to go into town to do the shopping my parents used to react to small groups of fans as if they were morally and intellectually below the level of weevils and likely to break out in senseless acts of random violence at any moment. Years later as a Charlton supporter visiting my mum I went to a match at Sincil Bank and was more bored than I had ever been at a football match, and I was watching Charlton at least every 2 weeks!
Glad for you and your fellow supporters Boom.
Cheers.
I know Navenby. Think I played football there years ago.
There is an absolutely fantastic bakers there called Welbournes.....without doubt the finest plum bread and pies you could wish for.....BUT, their prize winning sausage rolls are without doubt their crowning glory.....folk come from miles around to get 'em by the bucket load! With mashed potato, baked beans and onion gravy they are fit for a king and a nice Rioja to hand doesn't go amiss as well. So foolishly descriptive has my description been that....ooooooogh, I want some right now!
As a child I would get pork pies and sausages from Odlings the butcher. You could hear the pigs squealing out back. Didn't connect the two until years later....
Peoples moods perfectly understandable today after the adrenalin rush and feel good factor yesterday. It's a bit like having a bloody good booze up and suffering from a massive hangover the next day as you come down from the previous high.

One thing you won't find on TripAdvisor or the Internet is the specials, and plenty of rural places will have seasonal meals on the blackboard.
OK, please everyone return to the regularly scheduled lunacy.

Only on Charlton Life...
I have many stories but won't hijack the thread.
Well done Lincoln.
